Nigel Pearce

You remember certain mornings because they stand out in your memory. The sea exhibited a theatrical stillness while Cromer Pier radiated with warm, golden light. Something is fitting about talking all things Beatles under a sky that feels like a stage set. I had arrived early—early enough to catch the scent of sea air mixing with fresh coffee, waiting to meet a man who lives and breathes the music of the 60s: broadcaster, author, and Beatles historian Nigel Pearce, from Cromer.

I spotted him before he even got close — white jacket, bold red shirt, and the kind of boots that could walk straight out of Carnaby Street circa 1967. Nigel doesn’t just study the era. He wears it, walks in it, and perhaps most importantly, invites others to feel it too. And that’s precisely what he and Ray Anderson are about to do this summer on the Suffolk coast, at the Spa Pavilion, in fact! See the picture.

“There’s good news,” Nigel tells me, the words brimming with excitement. “We’re hosting East Anglia’s first-ever three-day Beatles Fest. It’s happening at the Felixstowe Spa Pavilion — and it’s been a long time in the planning.”

Vibrant Nigel Pearce Links Eras on Air

Nigel Pearce is more than a man with a mic. Based in Cromer, his voice is familiar across the UK’s radio landscape, from Future Radio 107.8FM in Norwich – Poppyland FM in North Norfolk – Swindon 105.5FM and even with Go Global Groove Radio FM, beaming out from Chicago, USA.

Nigel Pearce

But it’s his deep connection with Beatles history that truly sets him apart. As the author of Inside No. 3, a richly illustrated book tracing the product of Apple Records, he has established himself not just as a broadcaster, but as a preservationist — someone helping ensure the aura of music’s golden age isn’t lost to time. He’s also a member of Liverpool’s Beatles Bookstore and has spent decades building a collection of memorabilia that could rival small museums.

“The idea isn’t just to remember the Beatles,” he says. “It’s to bring the history alive — to give people a sample of what it felt like all those years ago.”

And from 20 to 22 June 2025, that’s exactly what will happen in Felixstowe.

Fabulous Beatles Fest, Day One: Brilliant Korgis will be Curtain-Raisers

The Korgis

Friday night’s opener is a gem: The Korgis, the British pop band best known for the haunting 1980 hit “Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime”, will take to the Spa Pavilion stage.

“They had several hits through the 70s and 80s,” Nigel explains. “And they’re recording these days at Shabby Road Studios — a cheeky nod to Abbey Road. Their tribute session will be something really special.”

The Korgis are no ordinary nostalgia act. Their current performances blend their classics with songs that shaped them — think Tears for Fears, Simon & Garfunkel — each one interpreted through their unique musical lens.

Day Two: Apple Story and The Quarrymen

Inside Number Three The Illustrated History of Apple Records
Inside Number Three The Illustrated History of Apple Records

Saturday kicks off with a rare treat: Inside Number Three, Nigel’s own Apple Records presentation. This is no dry lecture. It’s a sensory, audio-visual journey through the Beatles’ business empire — singles, albums, posters, rare films, forgotten footage. For fans who’ve only seen the highlights, this is a deep dive.

“We’ll have wall-to-wall video hits, some that many fans will have never seen,” says Nigel. “It’s a real chance to step back into 1968 — to really feel it.”

Later in the afternoon, audiences can expect free screenings of Beatles material, along with special inclusions such as footage of the late Joey Molland (the last member of Badfinger, who passed away just weeks ago), and an interview with Gary Van Syoc, who once played and recorded with John Lennon with the Plastic Ono Elephants Memory Band. Their Apple output was the Elephant’s Memory album, the Power Boogie Shuffle single, and John Lennon’s album, ‘Sometime in New York City.

“Gary has agreed to record and share an exclusive interview just for this event,” Nigel tells me, clearly moved.

Andrew Phillips

Author, Andrew Phillips, who has written a fabulous book on the Decca group, The Applejacks called ‘Like Dreamers Do’, will be presenting the story of when the Beatles and The Applejacks met and worked several times during 1963 and 64. Andrew will also chair a Q&A session.

Like Dreamers Do

The Quarrymen: From Skiffle Roots to Timeless Legacy

But Saturday evening may be the emotional heart of the weekend. The Quarrymen — the legendary group from which The Beatles emerged — still count three original members among their ranks: Rod Davis, Colin Hanton, and Len Garry. While Len is no longer able to travel, the band’s enduring legacy will be brought to life at Felixstowe by Rod and Colin, joined by a few musician friends, for a personal and intimate performance.

They’ll revisit stories and songs from their days playing with John Lennon in Liverpool — the heady, far-off days that planted the earliest seeds of what became The Beatles.

Their presence in Felixstowe isn’t just a performance; it’s a living, breathing piece of musical history.

“You’ll be seeing and hearing something truly special,” says Nigel. “Those early hits from the late 50s — brought to you by the very men who played them first.”

The Quarrymen

From Liverpool rooftops to festival stages across the world, The Quarrymen’s story isn’t just one of music — it’s one of memory, friendship, and transformation. These rare photographs, kindly shared by Rod Davis and the group, offer a glimpse into the journey, from their earliest days on the back of a lorry to recent performances that keep the legacy alive.

Day Three Bowie and Beatle Beat Magic

Nicky Horne’s Beatles, Bowie & Me.

By Sunday, there’s an emotional charge in the air. These aren’t just concerts anymore — they’re moments to treasure. And Nicky Horne’s part, Beatles, Bowie and me, will be very emotional.

Nicky, at one time, thought he had lost the tapes, but he found them in a box in his attic! Even then, he did not know if they would play. When he placed the tapes into the machine to check, he was amazed to find the recordings were crystal clear.

Nicky, a veteran DJ from the glory days of Capital Radio and now with Boom Radio, isn’t just presenting anecdotes. He’s opening his archives. Stories, perspectives, moments in time that haven’t been aired in decades. This offers something so rare — not just what the separate Beatles said, but exactly how they said it.

As the day charges up further, the final act will take the stage — and what a finale it is. The Upbeat Beatles are one of the best Beatles tribute bands. They’ve been on the circuit for over twenty years, known for their pitch-perfect harmonies, tight arrangements, and uncanny ability to channel the Fab Four’s spirit — without slipping into impersonation.

“They’re going to take you through the full journey,” Nigel says, “All eight-and-a-half, nine years of Beatles brilliance — from the Cavern Club to the rooftop.”

It’s the kind of set designed to leave people swaying, singing, and smiling all the way to their beds.

Why It Still Matters For All Generations

The Beatles weren’t just a band, they weren’t just a moment — they were a complete movement — and for the entire world, they still are. That’s why people are travelling to Felixstowe not just from across East Anglia, but from the US, Canada, and Europe.

“We’ve already had enquiries from as far as Canada and America,” Nigel shares. “It’s really exciting.”

Rehashing the past is not the point here. It’s about connecting with it. Younger audiences are discovering the music for the first time. Older fans are coming back to songs that shaped their lives. For three days, Felixstowe becomes a place where hearts beat in 4/4, and memories — even borrowed ones — feel vivid and alive.

There’s something enormously powerful about it all. In a theatre by the sea. Sharing songs that haven’t aged a day in feeling.

“We are getting older,” Nigel says, smiling. “But our hearts and our heads are not. And our love for the Beatles will remain intact around the world. That will never, ever change”

The Beatles Covers – But Not Music!

When The Beatles were carrying the whole world in their wake, it seemed to be the case that every manufacturer that could, would make something, or anything that could be attached to them in order that they would increase their turnover and their income.

However one thing or item that largely went unnoticed was the special or first day issue cover or envelope. These nowadays are an accepted form of high quality marketing. It was this condition of High Quality that stopped many companies receiving permission or an endorsement from The Beatles Management Structure, or more importantly Brian Epstein himself.

The Beatles First Day Covers

This did ensure that many large sums of money from products did not benefit the group in any way, but the First Day or Special Event Cover seemed to pass by largely unnoticed. Over the years I have been able to obtain quite a few of these and I thought that again this part of my collection from my personal archive would be engaging for many fans.

Now these items are one off examples that I was fortunate enough to obtain. Some of them were promotional ideas and thoughts largely from EMI and other loosely linked organisations. They now make a very interesting and rare part of Beatles History.

The listing is as follows, with a brief pen picture description.

1). A standard Parlophone Stationery Envelope used at times for promotional purposes.

2). A Gibraltar Special Issue First Day Cover showing a 1967 John Lennon Photograph to commentate the Marriage of John and Yoko.

3). A Hard Days Night Special Envelope from 1964 to commemorate the release of The Beatles First Film complete with stamp and date stamp.

4). Apple 1968 Our First Four and a mint set of the individual Stamps. This is part of my Our First Four set. This set has been shown here before.

5). Isle of Man First Day Cover signed personally by Ringo Starr.

6). A one off envelope idea not preceded with.

7). A War Is Over Envelope from that period. This was obtained from EMI Records . Apparently only a very few were issued.

8). A Dark Horse Records Special Stationery Envelope used for Press Releases. This one was for the duo Splinter on the occasion of their first album. The Place I love.

9). The Special Envelope used by Capitol Records to enclose the re-call letters for the Butcher Covers for the Yesterday and Today Covers.

10). A general shot of the letter; one finished in Red and one in Blue Emblazoned Inks. Both of these and the envelope came via EMI  in London England. These had been sent to EMI as courtesy copies from Capitol Records in the USA.

11). A single close up shot of the Red Sample letter. Note the emblazoned word SAMPLE placed on the letter.

This completes the description of the illustrated items, and I add that there are more to be shown at a later date. These are priceless artefacts from my archives, and are kept in the dark and out of contact with direct sunlight. This is the first viewing undertaken for over two years.

The Apple Records Story to be a Radio Series

The ongoing success of Inside No3 continues to make its mark with the Apple Records story going to radio!!

The revolutionary style of this book Inside No3 has shown the mark of Apple Records in a totally different way to many Beatles fans and has now been rewarded with the novel approach undertaken by author Nigel Pearce.

Radio Series

Apple Records - Inside Number Three
Apple Records – Inside Number Three

Inside No 3 has now been commissioned to be turned into a Radio Serial that delves so much deeper into the entire Apple Story. This will cover the entire first 10 years of the label from conception to its closing in 1976. Starting in 1966, the next Ten Years proved to be something that no one cover ever imagine. The ideas and scope of everybody who was involved with the label and the company, have ensured that a huge legacy has not only been left to the world, it continues to provide a “Revolutionary” inspiration to the art and music world, while at the same time still changing social attitudes everywhere.

Number 3 Savile Row
Number 3 Savile Row

The Beatles may have left the world as a group in 1970, but the force and impact of this foursome still continues to grow and strengthen and Apple is a huge part of that. In short, it still lives up to its central theme of being a “Foundation for the Arts”.

Our First Four Set
Our First Four Set

Nigel’s book was indeed a completely different and novel way of showing the impact and direction of this ideal. While the book only shows around 10% of his entire collection, what is shown is in beautiful detail and colour, with the aim of supporting the artist shown to its fullest extent.

Nigel has much more in his archives including demo recordings, memos, photographs as well as every record issued from No 3 Savile Row London W.1,  which at the present time is available for renting .

What's The New Mary Jane
What’s The New Mary Jane

The series is currently in production and is being framed, for release next year along with a launch event to officially announce the series going to airwaves on the UK Radio network. More will be revealed about its scope and content along with its style, but suffice to say this has never been done before, so this is a real radio and music first . It is so exciting to contemplate. Stay tuned,, there is so much more to follow ……

Regards and best wishes

The Beatles From Us To You

This beautiful set, The Beatles From Us To You, redefines a most important period in the development and growth of The Beatles. This is a compendium of the group’s early broadcasts done for the BBC in 1963/64 and is priceless in the sense that this period of time has now been re-imagined. This means we can now hear them exactly as the studios at the BBC record them, and it is staggering to listen and understand, that their records were exactly as the quartet played. They were totally unique and Brilliant!!

The passage of time has only enhanced what we already knew, but now it can be confirmed to millions of new fans who continue to fall under their magical spell.

This is the front cover presentation of the 4-set pack

The Beatles From Us To You
The Beatles From Us To You

This is the front view again but with the CD set open to view

The Beatles From Us To You - CDs
The Beatles From Us To You – CDs

This is the rear of the pack, again with the CDs relevant to each pack

The Beatles From Us To You - Rear of the Cases
The Beatles From Us To You – Rear of the Cases

The important thing to note is the use of the early 1960s LP Presentation, which solidifies the complete set-up, including the black-and-white photographs.

As a final note, while it is 2024, it cannot be underestimated just how much influence and standing The Beatles continue to have in the whole music business and social attitudes the world over. Their output, standing, and influence are not just notes for reference, it’s not just history in words and sounds, it is a whole new generation of influence and standing that just grows and enhances with the passage of time. The influence really continues to grow like no other. Yes, other bands and artists have a re-birth at times, but when one looks at this business, The Beatles do not have a re-birth, it is a total vindication and re-enhancement of what is always going to be… the Greatest music phenomenon ever!

THE ABBEY ROAD ‘WORKING’ BOX SET.

This set came my way about two months before the release of the Abbey Road Set in 2019.

It was what we call a ‘Brown Envelope Job’.

I was totally amazed at what was inside – although the finished and released package was beautifully packaged and set out, this gave me a huge insight into how the package was heading. Again this is a ‘working’ box set, it displayed some wonderful thought. Apparently, there were 100 constructed and this is number 12.

This is the front of the sample package.

All four parts note pieces displayed. You will find that the wording displayed here was used except for package four  – The Alternate Abbey Road.

Abbey Road Internal Package

This is the general shot of the internal workings of the package thus far. You can see that it resembles in some way the design of the UK Our First Four Package from 1968. Complete with four photos 3 of which are from that famous shoot in August 1969. Sample CDs are displayed along with a small photograph also from that shoot. Some are perhaps the original copies being somewhat light struck!! This photograph also shows the holding box to the left.

Abbey Road Package contents

This is the rear of the interior package

It shows different versions of the rear of the Abbey Road cover, complete with the track listings for each album. Of great interest is package four which was never issued, This is another 2019 re-mix with the later versions of Here Comes The Sun, – the Accapella version of Because. and an Intro version of Come Together. As said this was never issued in any form, but is canned somewhere, nice to have it. I admit I have it on my computer and make backup copies when my playing one gets scratched due to the potholed roads offered by the authorities in our wonderful country!!

Rear of the Abbey Road Package

This set was never issued, but having it in my collection is a real plus. Knowing that only 100 were issued, having one is extra special. So, I do hope this one-off viewing will meet with your approval. Like all of my Apple material, it is kept in a box stored out of sunlight and is very rarely opened, hence its excellent condition!
