In 1958, Paul McCartney invited his school friend John Duff Lowe to play piano with the Quarrymen. That same year, Duff played on the first record made by the Quarrymen, consisting of himself, Colin Hanton, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison. That alone would be enough to secure Duff’s place in musical history, but it’s only the beginning of the fascinating tale of the mysterious missing Quarryman.
Making Rock and Breaking Stock, written by John Duff Lowe and Michael X. Savvas, recounts Duff’s life, particularly in relation to the Beatles. You’ll discover the real reason why the Quarrymen made their record in ’58; which iconic Beatles song Duff contributed to; where John Lennon named Duff in print; and why Lennon said, ‘This is Duff. He breaks stock.’ The book also shows how Duff influenced the Beatles’ liking for piano and other keyboard instruments in their music.
Duff tells the full the story behind selling the acetate from ’58 to Paul McCartney in 1981, which would become the most valuable record in the world.
Beatles and Quarrymen fans alike will come to know Duff as a person, through his own words and through interviews with his family, friends and fans. There are new stories and previously unpublished photographs.
The portrait for the book’s front cover was created by Helen Anderson (John Lennon’s friend from art college), and the cover design was done by Jann Haworth (co-designer of the Sgt. Pepper album cover) and Paul Blandford. The foreword was written by Shadows’ guitarist, Hank Marvin.
All you need is Lowe.
