The Beatles Magazine

The Beatles Magazine

Recently I received a notice from a great Beatles friend of mine from Virginia informing me of an exciting new quarterly Beatles magazine entitled “The Beatles Magazine.”

The novel approach this magazine was taking was that the issue dates were going to correspond with the time that the actual events occurred back in the sixties. Based on the description offered for the magazine, I decided to subscribe and when I received the first issue, I was amazed at the content I was reading because the stories were written as if we were in the year when the actual events occurred.

John Lennon and Bob Wooler

For example, A few sample stories are an account of Paul’s 21st birthday party with John’s confrontation with Bob Wooler which almost put a stop to the Beatles before they climbed to the pinnacle of fame. Another superb article is an account of Paul’s writing an early Beatles song entitled “Pinwheel Twist”. Another fascinating article from the first issue is Pete Best’s assessment of why he was let go by the Beatles.

It is a quarterly magazine that takes a unique perspective to the articles written about our favorite group. If you notice the cover of the first issue shown below, you will notice that the date provided in the magazine for the first issue is 1963. It is a unique perspective for the mag because it highlights information that occurred back in 1963 as if it were being written today with additional information provided.  After receiving the first issue, I was heartbroken to hear that not enough people subscribed to the magazine to be able to provide the funds in order to finance future issues of the magazine.

Single Issue

To me this was a disheartening revelation as this magazine was clearly aimed at a very serious and knowledgeable Beatles fan base. Because of economic realities, the one-issue magazine became an instant collector’s item. Ironically, it is the fan base that suffers as this magazine was both innovative, informative and clearly original and unique in its approach to Beatles information. I thank the publisher for the opportunity to have received and read this excellent magazine. It is my sincere wish that this idea be revisited at a future date as the premise of the magazine was simply too good of an idea to disappear.

Such a shame that the magazine only had a single issue, but what a collector’s item!

What is your favorite Beatles magazine? Do you subscribe to one at the moment?

A TRIBUTE TO MY FAVORITE BLOG ADMINISTRATOR – DAVID BEDFORD!!!

Liddypool Birthplace of The Beatles

I would like to take this opportunity to highlight many of the exciting, informative, and educational literary works of our blog administrator, David Bedford. I first met David at a Fest for Beatles Fans several years ago and was instantly impressed with his pleasant personality. It was a great way to meet David, sharing the atmosphere of a great Beatles-related gathering.

With my large Beatles book collection, very few authors can truly impress me either with new information or a different perspective about the Beatles story. David has fulfilled both of those tasks for me.  Here is a brief summary of some of his excellent books and work….David’s Beatles knowledge is often understated as he helps to expand the horizons of the Beatles knowledge-base for all of us to enjoy and relish.

All of the Beatles history is certainly not available to all of us, but David has made a significant contribution in uncovering a lot of information about our favorite band not previously known! For that accomplishment, we should all be very grateful!!!

Liddypool

David’s Liddypool book helps us all to understand why the force that rocked the world had to come from Liverpool. From the unique Scouse sense of humor to the ability of the Liverpudlians to take American music and present it back to America and the rest of the world in a unique and fascinating form/way.

Finding The Fourth Beatle

One of my favorite Bedford/ Popper books where virtually all of the people who at one time played drums for the Beatles are explored: Finding the Fourth Beatle. Guaranteed that you probably will learn quite a few things that you never knew before about the multiple individuals who played drums for the band. I found this book to be extremely informative and details not previously known to the public are finally exposed in this great work!

The Country of Liverpool: Nashville of The North

Another interesting book by David explores the influence of country music on Liverpool and how the Liverpool groups were able to synergistically mold country and pop music. The book also deals with the origins of skiffle and the Country roots of The Beatles. An excellent book by David!

The Beatles Fab Four Cities

David is one of the authors of this virtual travelogue of Beatles sites throughout 4 major world cities of Liverpool, Hamburg, London, and New York! The other authors of this wonderful book – The Beatles Fab Four Cities – are Susan Ryan and Richard Porter. Their expertise in the Beatles-related sites in the 4 cities mentioned is second to none!

The Fab One Hundred and Four: The Evolution of The Beatles

This book happens to be one of my favorites not only for the photographs of rare and some unknown Beatles-related personalities but of the numerous previously unknown stories that are revealed within this book. Can’t miss with this title: The Fab One Hundred and Four: The Evolution of The Beatles

Inspector Rocke

David has even toyed with murder fiction that is set in Liverpool, of course! Inspector Rocke. An excellent read and fiction of this type is very difficult to write. Kudos to you David!

Bill Zygmant: Where Did You Get That Shirt?

David Bedford and Paul Skellett used their respective talents and helped to organize this fabulous limited edition book by noted photographer, Bill Zygmant. Bill took some of the last photos of John and Yoko before they moved permanently to the United States. The fabulous photos of the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix contained within this book are other major highlights.

Looking for Lennon

One other David Bedford item I would like to mention is the documentary that David acted as the historian on and that is the fabulous DVD of “Looking for Lennon.”

I loved this examination of the early days about the founder of the world’s greatest pop band!

Additional details of the people that were involved with the creation of this project are provided at this link

Most of the book titles mentioned above are available at The Beatles bookstore with the link at the top of this page, or by clicking on the links and covers of the books.

Thanks, David, for all of the great work!!!

Wait until you see David’s next book project!!! It will make you wonder and imagine, “What if”? I can say no more!!!

Copyrighting The Beatles – NEW BOOK!

Copyrighting The Beatles

After over three years of research, Terry Crain’s newest book is out in digital form. This book, titled “Copyrighting The Beatles,” chronicles over 900 Beatles and Beatles-related copyrights from 1963 to 1966.

Over 300 Beatles Copyrights?

In the annuals of the Library of Congress, there are Beatles and Beatles-related copyrights for musical screenplays, lectures, spoken word writings, dolls, Beatles records, newspaper artwork, paintings, drawings, articles, toys, posters, albums, sculptures, jewelry, portraits, magazines, record cases, sheet music, novelty records, television scripts, newspaper cartoons, impromptu skits, books, photographs, documentary scripts, satire animations, cover records in French, Dutch, Spanish, and German, and more! This reference publication details the copyrights in chronological order, making it easy to follow the growth of this wild and wacky genre.

Novelty Records

Over 300 of these copyrights are Beatles novelty records in the genres of American folk, British folk, foxtrot, jive, samba, bluegrass, doo-wop, country, big band, blues, jazz, orchestral, spoken-word, surf, ska, and polka!

Designer, Beatles author, and collector Andrew Croft created the cover graphic, Tom Frangione wrote the Foreword, and Cha Chi Loprete wrote the Introduction.

Crain tells people “I’m unsure if I wrote a book, reference guide, or encyclopedia!”

The Beatles North American Fan Club

Dear Beatle People

SECOND GENERATION BEATLES FAN HAS PUBLISHED 2ND BOOK

After thoroughly enjoying reading Sara Schmidt’s first book about the Beatles playing in St. Louis, I was so happy to learn she was planning a new Beatles book. Well, it is now here!!! Published in April of 2023 it is the story of the Beatles North American Fan Club from beginning to sad end. I love books like this that deal with the direct impact the Beatles had on their fanbase. Published in both hardcover and softcover and features fantastic illustrations by noted artist, Eric Cash. This book proves that the labels of First Generation and Second Generation Beatle fans have little or no meaning or significance in the love that we all share for that fabulous group from Liverpool.  A job well done, Sara!!!

Sara also runs an excellent website entitled “Meet the Beatles for Real” which features many rare and obscure Beatles-related photos. Both of her books are available through Amazon! At least one of her titles is also available through the Beatles Bookstore!

THE BEATLES IN AUSTRALIA – TO THE TOPPERMOST OF THE POPPERMOST

Beatles in Australia

The Beatles in Australia? Hamburg has often been credited as the birth of the Beatles as it was the place where they honed their musicianship there with long 7 or 8-hour sets. Fans in the UK and Liverpool specifically, would probably object to that description because the hysteria surrounding Beatlemania occurred when the Beatles returned to their native England after their Hamburg stint. It was after the Beatles had returned to the UK that their songwriting skills also began to flourish. Most Beatles scholars would state that once the Beatles came to America, they conquered the world.

However, the Australians will point out proudly that the largest Beatles crowd and reception to view them during 1964, was not in any of those countries. The biggest crowd to attempt to see the Beatles was in Australia and this book published in Australia is a historical photo essay of the Beatles’ 1964 trip to that country. It is estimated that more than 300,000 fans came to welcome the band In Adelaide, which was the largest crowd seeing them in their touring career.

The Beatles must have been in shock for such a large crowd to view them along a 10-mile route that day.   Another reason the book holds a special place in my collection is that the drummer pictured on the cover is not Ringo Starr, it is Jimmie Nicol, who substituted for Ringo while he was ill for 13 days during the Beatles playing in the Netherlands and in Australia. Ringo was to rejoin the Beatles in Melbourne, Australia in June of 1964.

The book was put together by noted Beatles photo collector Mark Hayward and the photos in the book are fantastic. New Holland Publishers Pty, Limited-2005.

The book is occasionally featured on Ebay and on the book search service at Abe books.

A sad newspaper article which details what happened to Jimmie Nicol” a man that had seen the mountaintop but only for a very short time. “Fame” can certainly be fleeting. Author Jim Berkenstadt has written a superb book about the Jimmie Nicol story and that book is pictured below

Paul Harris wrote this story for the Daily Mail.
