An excellent book – The John Lennon Letters – signed by the editor: HUNTER DAVIES
Far more than any interview, personal letters and notes are far more revealing about one’s personality and true character, as they represent less-guarded moments where one is less likely to alter the presentation of what they are trying to say. This is especially true when the topic of conversation may be of a controversial nature.
Author Hunter Davies secured the permission of Yoko Ono to present a book of John Lennon’s correspondence over the years. It offers a unique perpective into Mr. Lennon, highlighting his multi-faceted personality, his sense of humor (humour) and his view of how he saw the world, and his own perceived motives of the people he was writing to or commenting about!
Hunter Davies always had a collector’s obsessive-compulsive psyche as he has written a book about collecting entitled Confessions of a Collector back in 2009. HIs collector’s psyche had obviously much to do with the thoroughness in his presentation of the volume and amount of letters and writings presented of the literary Lennon in the book! You will enjoy this title very much as it reveals far more any any biography ever could about the man named John Lennon!!!

The John Lennon Letters
The back cover of the book which features a John Lennon letter to his cousin Leila with the ironic closing line:
Including a one page excerpt from the massive book. This was a letter John Lennon sent to his father Alfred Lennon in 1967. This helps to serve as a sterling example of John’s personality, revealing some of his basic insecurities. You can see the duality here. He internally wants to reestablish contact with his father but he is unsure of how it will turn out and whether the hurt and resentment he harbored would possibly resurface.

This Beatles Book Odds & Book Ends blog post is similar to many of the Hodgepodge posts that I have presented on the blog in the past. I would like to begin with another author that has written several books that have held strong interest for me and that I have purchased for my collection. Many of these books have a strong Beatles connection to them.
This post begins with a few books from author, Brian Southall:
BOOKS FROM FORMER EMI EXECUTIVE BRIAN SOUTHALL
Brian Southall is another writer who I have managed to acquire most of his book titles that he has written that have some type of Beatles connection or story within their pages!
Brian Southall began his writing career about the music industry back in the 1960s beginning at a local newspaper and then advancing to the likes of Melody Maker and Disc. Then he pursued a thirty year career in the record business. He started out at A&M, then moved on to EMI Records, where, he had a 15 year career, serving in press, promotion, marketing, artist development, and corporate communications.
From 1989 he was a consultant to Warner Music International, HMV Group and both the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and the International Federation of the phonographic Industry (IFPI).
POP GOES TO COURT: ROCK ‘N’ POP’S GREATEST COURT BATTLES
Pop Goes to Court: Rock ‘n’ Pop’s Greatest Court Battles Southall, Brian
From a discussion of the suit brought to officially split the Beatles, to who really wrote A Whiter Shade of Pale,
many court cases involving many prominent rock ‘n’ roll figures or celebrities over the years are discussed in this unique Brian Southall book. You will find some of these cases truly fascinating!

The Beatles in 100 Objects: Discover What Made the Fab Four Fab Southall, Brian
Published by Carlton Books, 2019
One hundred of the most famous or influential objects associated with the Fab Four are presented in this book by Mr. Southall. Obviously many of the object choices could be considered subjective by individual viewers and readers but the intent or premise of the book is seemingly to promote people to think about them and how they would weigh in on the particular object’s importance or possibly to suggest their own!!!
This book is both a happy one and a very sad one as well. A happy one because it features the collection of Julian Lennon of many of the Beatles items that he was able to purchase or acquire at auction over the years. The sad element is that he had to purchase them at all instead of receiving them as an inheritance after his father’s passing!
Beatles Memorabilia: The Julian Lennon Collection Southall, Brian; Lennon, Julian
NORTHERN SONGS: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BEATLES’ SONG PUBLISHING EMPIRE
I found this book to be fascinating and what gives credence to the expression Money is the Root of all Evil. It was business and money matters that were the greatest contributor to the demise of the the world’s greatest band. Sometimes the best of friendships and close families can break apart due to money or financial matters!

A RARE BOOK FROM JOHN’s SISTER-JULIA(IN HIS OWN YOUTH IN MY OWN WORDS)
A nice early book from the mid 1980s from John’s half-sister Julia! Had a wonderful assortment of early photographs
Published by River Women Press Press, Cheshire England, 1985
Julia was later to release later works about her family and her brother. Those will be dealt with in a future post.
Here is an example of inflation as I originally bought my signed copy of the book (shown below) forr $35.00. I recently saw a signed copy on Abe Boks for $200.00!
Back in 2022, I contacted Andrew Fleming of Strawberry Fields , the organization that strives to preserve the historical significance of this great Liverpool site where the buliding and grounds that housed the place which inspired John to write the Beatles classic were situated, “Strawberry Fields Forever.” I asked Andrrew if I could purchase a signed copy of the special cd they were offering of John’s sister Julia, having a conversation with non other than Paul McCartney. .Andrew was so kind in asking Julia, who is a director at the site, to sign this great interview cd for me which is presented below. I am including the Strawberry Fields link, as purchases from the website help them to preserve and sustain this wonderful place for future generations!
An interesting book about Paul McCartney’s songwriting and appearance on other artists records by Rick Swan published by Wymer Publishers in Bedford England in 2020. As I have stated before, the one problem with books such as these is when new recordings are issued, the book becomes in need of an update or a revised edition. The book is entertaining but the author I personally believe is overly harsh and critical on his assessment of some of McCartney’s numbers.
“The Beatles: Literary Anthology recounts the group’s mercurial rise from the British Merseybeat scene; the “British invasion” that made them iconic figures in the USA; the experimentation with song structure and sound-recording technique that re-defined pop music forever; their embracing of psychedelic drugs, hippie utopianism and pacifism, amidst the social changes of the mid-to-late 1960s; the band’s acrimonious split, and the disparate, sometimes tragic post-Beatles paths followed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The strange extremes of a career virtually unparalled in terms of mass-media fame are also examined in thought-provoking articles: the American Far Right’s conspiracy theory that marked the Beatles as agents of Communism; the “Paul is Dead” myth, and the cryptographic reading of Beatles trivia that inspired it; the attempts of Lennon, with all his human failings, to live with his absurdly messianic status; the insane “messages” that the Manson Family girls deciphered from the lyrics of The White Album; the obsessions of disturbed Beatles fan Mark Chapman, and his tragic attempt to steal a little of Lennon’s celebrity.”

Though my favorite books about the FBI’s attempts by J. Edgar Hoover and the Nixon government to throw John Lennon out of the country because of his perceived power with the youth of the time, were written by author Jon Wiener (see: Come Together: John Lennon in His Time and Gimme Some Truth: The John Lennon FBI Files), I also purchased this book by Julien Kerry. It makes a great companion piece to the two Jon Wiener books!
JOHN LENNON – Wanted by the FBI by Julien Kern | Oct 15, 2014
“The ultimate and most comprehensive book on the John Lennon FBI files. For the first time, the complete FBI files on John Lennon are published, explained and illustrated. These documents, completed by CIA and INS archives, shine a new light on John Lennon’s post-Beatles life in New York City. He was investigated for pornography, harassed for several years by President Nixon’s administration that wanted to deport him because of his political and anti Vietnam War activism. The FBI also investigated when Lennon and his family were later threatened for money. The last file tackles issues relating to his murder in December 1980. This book is a must have for every Lennon fan and for anyone interested in his life, artistic achievements, political activism and peace campaigns.”

Occasionally I will purchase an auction catalog if it features items of interest to me. Even if I can not afford the item, purchasing the catalog will at least allow me to have pictures of the items that intrigue me. AMAZON DESCRIPTION “The perfect gift for any Beatles fan, In Their Lives is an anthology of essays from a chorus of twenty-nine luminaries singing the praises of their favorite Beatles songs.
Blue Rider Press Publication date May 23, 2017
The Beatles’ influence—on their contemporaries, on our cultural consciousness, and on the music industry ever after—is difficult to overstate. We all have a favorite song from the band that made us want to fall in love, tune in, and follow our dreams. Arranged chronologically by the date of the song’s release, these essays highlight both the Beatles’ evolution as well as the span of generations their music affected. Whether they are Beatlemaniacs who grew up listening to the iconic albums on vinyl or new fans who stream their favorite songs on their phones, all of the contributors explore that poignant intersection between Beatles history and personal history.
With contributions from twenty-nine authors and musicians—Roz Chast on “She Loves You,” Jane Smiley on “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” Rosanne Cash on “No Reply,” Gerald Early on “I’m a Loser,” Rick Moody on “The End,” Maria Popova on “Yellow Submarine,” David Duchovny on “Dear Prudence,” Chuck Klosterman on “Helter Skelter,” David Hajdu on “You Know My Name (Look Up the Number),” and more—the breadth of the band’s impact is clear. From musings on young love and family strife to explorations of racial boundaries and identity, these essays pay tribute to a band that ran the gamut of human experience in a way no musical group has done before or since.
Timed for the fiftieth anniversary of the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, this anthology captures the full spectrum of reasons fans still love the Fab Four after all these years.”

Inside Number Three – The Illustrated History of Apple Records
Inside No3 takes you through that famous door, deep into the minds of all who worked there at Apple Records. This is done also in a very different way. This is not a kiss-and-tell diary, it is through fan adulation and understanding via a personal collection of artifacts and memorabilia that author Nigel Pearce has built up over the last 50 years.
THE RUMORED SONG THAT MICK JAGGER AND KEITH RICHARDS SUPPOSEDLY OFFERED
There has been a notable rumor that has circulated for some time that indicate that once the Beatles had provided the hit song I Wanna Be Your Man to the Rolling Stones that the Stones attempted to reciprocate and Mick Jagger and Keith Richards offered a 1964 composition to the Beatles called Give Me Your Hand.
The information offered below in quotes is from this YouTube site at one of the listings for Teddy Green’s recording of the song entitled Give Me Your Hand.
Here is the story that appears at the YouTube site above:
“Give Me Your Hand — Teddy Green (Piccadilly 7N 35173, March 20 1964) –Supposedly written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards despite the cd below that states only a Jagger credit for the song. The story goes that this song was originally offered to the Beatles by way of thanks for them giving “I Wanna Be Your Man” to the Stones for their second single. Apparently the Beatles said that they’d record it if the Stones recorded another one of their songs, namely “One After 909”.
Neither band took up the offer and it’s something of a mystery how “Give Me Your Hand” should turn up as the ‘b’ side to song called “Always” by an obscure singer who had played a bit part in two Cliff Richard movies, “The Young Ones” and “Summer Holiday”. The song itself is obviously an “answer” to “I Want To Hold Your Hand” and is, without doubt, one of the worst songs that Mick and Keith ever wrote and Teddy’s performance is suitably excruciatingly awful! It’s no wonder that it never formed part of the Beatles’ repertoire! Nobody bought the record. Teddy Green went on to become a successful choreographer.”
When I saw this original description of this track that the Beatles rejected from the Stones, I decided I would like a copy of the recording of this curiosity piece and discovered that I could find the track on the following 2 cd set which contains the song in question which was the B-side of the original record released by Teddy Green. The A side was called Always.
This is the vinyl A and B sides of the Teddy Green promo 45 of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards number they wrote that Teddy Green recorded as a B-side after the Beatles had reportedly rejected the song of Give Me Your Hand. Obtaining this promo 45 would be extremely expensive so I was content in obtaining the track in the cd release shown below the A and B sides featured below:
Despite the story about the supposed Jagger/Richards authorship, the record site called DISCOGS states that the B-side was solely written by Jagger. Here is the description of the song from their site. This story is also posing many questions as did Jagger begin to write songs that early without Keith’s involvement?
TEDDY GREEN Always (Rare 1964 UK solid centre advance promotional vinyl 7″ for the single release, also featuring Give Me Your Hand – a song written by Mick Jagger alone with no Keith involvement & consequently of particular interest to Rolling Stones completists, Piccadilly company die cut paper sleeve 7N.35173)
Maybe because of the common theme of this number to the Beatles I Want to Hold Your Hand, Jagger was making an early songwriting attempt to prove that he also could write songs. It is possible that this could be a first example of Jagger’s competiveness with the Beatles even at a very embryonic stage….
Regardless of what is true, it still makes for an interesting story!
Give Me Your Hand
The song supposedly offered to the Beatles but they turned down and the song was recorded by Teddy Green:
This is the 2 cd set that I bought on eBay that features the Teddy Green track written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richard back in 1964. The Give Me Your Hand track appeared on CD #2.
Other Beatles Connections
There were other Beatles connections with many of the other artists that appear on this 2 cd set.
For example the REMO FOUR had a song that was produced by George Harrison that was to appear on a special edition of George’s Wonderwall soundtrack:
Jackie Lomax , Apple artist, was a former member of the Undertakers, the Liverpool group that the Beatles appeared on the same bill as.
Tommy Quickly who is on this album at one time was to record the Paul McCartney track Tip of My Tongue
The 13 day Beatle, Jimmy Nicol, appears on 2 of the tracks on this cd with the group called the Shubdubs
That coupled with the Stones song that they reportedly offered to the Beatles made this an inviting purchase for me to add to the collection.
Though the song may be nothing special to write home about, I am happy that I now have it in the archive! Even if the story does not have any credibility whatsoever, it is still an interesting rumor nonetheless!
Front cover of the cd that features theGive Me Your Hand B-side to the Teddy Green record. Even though it has been touted as a Mick Jagger Keith Richards number, the cd seems to only credit Mick Jagger from the record issued in 1964:
The track listing for the 2 cd set:
Regardless if there is any empirical support for the rumor detailed above, it still makes for a very interesting story. Hope some substantiation turns up one day establishing the veracity of the rumor!
Hope you enjoyed viewing this novelty cd and the stories about some of the artists that appear on the set as well!

THE APPLE FAMILY TREE HOUSE -BY THOMAS J. MEENACH III
I remember purchasing my copy of this book (booklet) back in the mid 70s. (1976). A little more than 30 pages in length, this Apple Record discography was put together/compiled by the late Thomas Meenach III who passed away in 2018. It helped to serve as one of the first major catalogs of Apple records that had been issued up until that time. As an independent publication, I loved this early guide as to the Apple Records that were in existence for all of us collectors to seek out for our respective archives and collections.
This book/booklet today is extremely difficult to find. Once in a while, a copy will turn up on eBay!
Happy hunting!!!

Seeking out these small run independently produced publications about the Beatles is extremely rewarding for a collector. They are usually printed independently with a small amount of copies actually printed, enhancing their rarity and correspondingly, their collecting value as well!
I have read somewhere that the late Mr. Meenach was also the founder or creator of Tobe Milo records, which specialized in issuing many rare recordings.
Hope you enjoyed viewing this rare and obscure print item! If you have a copy, would love for you to share your comments about it!
Exposing the Conflict Between The Beatles and the Record Label that Made Them: CAPITOL RECORDS
Beatles fans as well as individuals who have an interest in music history will undoubtedly look forward to being able to read this exciting new book by author and TV consultant, Andrew Cook!
Andrew has an extensive educational background in the study of history and he thoroughly explores in his new book the relationship that the Beatles had with the record company that will be forever be linked to their worldwide rise to fame and fortune, Capitol Records. The marriage between the Beatles and their record label was lucrative for both sides but often the discussions that were going on in the board rooms could have spelled far different outcomes for both parties.
This book will help you to discover WHY!
Many people love the study of homonyms in the English language -words that sound exactly the same but can also have different spellings and meanings. Capital and Capitol certainly have those distinct meanings in this tale of the mammoth record label and their relationship with the enormously talented pop/rock group from the UK, who certainly generated an extraordinary amount of capital for the company. You will learn the fascinating details of what the business marketing decisions concerning the Beatles were being based on.
The marketing of the Beatles at Capitol Records is quite the series of intricate and often bewildering stories. Certainly not all the decisions that were being made were good ones, depending on the vantage point on whether you were the artist or the company. The rationale behind corporate decisions are discussed at length in this tale. You will enjoy this book’s detailed attempt to educate and inform you about what was going on behind the scenes at the record company that will permanently be linked to the world’s most successful musical and entertainment phenomenon!
Capitalize on this great opportunity and check out this intriguing new book!
