PHOTOS OF PAUL McCARTNEY AT THE LYCEUM THEATER, NEW YORK CITY: AUGUST 24, 1989.

A great time in 1989 for Paul McCartney at the Lyceum Theater:

Two very good friends, Billy Maura and me, John Bezzini, were both members of Paul’s fan club and Paul was always very generous to members of the fan club in terms of ticket offers and in 1989 Paul McCartney did a special performance on August 24th, 1989, at the Lyceum Theater in New York City at 149 West 45th Street in preparation for his upcoming tour. Bill and I were fortunate to get tickets to this event through the fan club. We patiently waited in line outside with our tickets from the fan club as Raquel Welch and Paul Schaefer brushed by to get to their VIP seating for the show. As we entered the theater the band was just ending their rehearsal for the night’s performance!

The show was scheduled for 6 PM but was delayed for quite some time before beginning. Finally, the lights dimmed and we knew instantly we were about to be listeners to a great show!

Paul did 19 numbers at the performance. We kept a list of the numbers performed at this special show that was done to promote his upcoming Flowers in the Dirt tour! Though we were up in the balcony section we did our best to take as many photographs as possible. Photos were taken by both William Maura and John Bezzini. We were shooting them from the balcony in low light, so they are not very clear, but they provided a strong memory to us of a wonderful show!

Band Introductions:

Then came the introduction of the band members:

Robbie McIntyre-guitar

Wix Wickens-keyboards

Chris Whitten-drums

Linda McCartney-keyboards

Hamish Stuart-guitar

Paul McCartney on bass, guitar, and piano

The Concert resumes:

Then the concert resumed with these numbers:

11. Can’t Buy Me Love

12. I Saw Her Standing There

13. This One

14. My Brave face

15. Twenty Flight Rock

16. Long and Winding Road

17. Ain’t That a Shame

18. Let It Be

19. Coming Up

The show was tight, the musicianship and band members were spot on, and Paul’s vocals were superb! What more can you ask for?

That was it, we left NYC at 11:15 to head back to our respective homes in Connecticut!

Hope you enjoyed Bill Maura’s and Buzz’s memories of a wonderful show and concert back in the 1980s!

What is YOUR favourite Paul McCartney concert? When and where? Let me know in the comments.

Be healthy and be happy!

  1. I have photos I took of Paul at the Lyceum concert in NYC on Aug. 24, 1989 in one of my many Beatles photo albums. That was an amazing concert. My friend, Barbara & I got up at the crack of dawn to go to the Lyceum & meet up with our friends. However, it was quite unfair that people who won tickets from a radio station (I don’t recall which one) were allowed into the theatre before us Fan Club Members.

  2. Very Cool!
You saw him even earlier than I did–October 9, 1989 in Paris, on John Lennon’s Birthday!

  3. Best McCartney concert:

Footage of the last play at Shes brought the house down instantly. A historic night.

  5. I don’t think you posted enough photos. HaHa!
