Born in Brooklyn, David M. Spindel discovered photography in high school and went on to study at Rochester Institute of Technology under legendary educators including Minor White and Ralph Hattersley. After apprenticing in New York, he opened his own studio in 1970, quickly gaining recognition from major advertising agencies.
Spindel’s commissions from Major League Baseball launched his signature still life photography, using hundreds of nostalgic memorabilia items to create visual time capsules. His work was self-published as posters and licensed worldwide, earning a devoted collector following. He also created limited edition projects with legends including Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Phil Rizzuto.
His humor shines through his Rebus photographs, visual wordplay pieces widely licensed for posters and apparel. Abbeville Press later signed Spindel to an eight book Major League Memories publishing series.
In 1980, John Lennon and Yoko Ono selected Spindel to photograph their return to the studio for the Double Fantasy sessions, making him the last photographer entrusted with documenting them together. His images have appeared worldwide and will be featured in Steven Soderbergh’s 2026 film John Lennon: The Last Interview.
Now based in Anthem, Arizona, Spindel continues telling stories through photography.

I was asked by Eduardo from Brazil in Portuguese who took the photograph of John in the morgue? I told him that it must have been either someone that worked at the facility housing the body, or someone at the facility allowed a photographer to enter. In either case, it was a despicable thing to do!
