By John “Buzz” Bezzini
Jürgen Vollmer is widely credited with cutting The Beatles’ signature “mop top” hairstyle in 1961, after they visited him in Paris in the very early 60s. Jürgen was one of three primary contacts of the Beatles in their early Hamburg days. The other Germans in that early trio, were of course, Klaus Voormann and Astrid Kirchherr! The trio as well as other German Beatles contacts were frequently referred to as the EXIS, short for existentialists which was a popular idiom describing a large segment of the college age people in the artistic community. Writers like Franz Kafka were very popular with this crowd!

Jürgen Vollmer probably did not realize at the time that he was about to contribute significantly to pop culture history not only because of his excellent photography talents but also due to the haircuts that he provided to both John and Paul when they visited Vollmer in the early 60s in Paris.
The world would never recover or be the same again!
