TODAY’S GUEST: David M. Spindel

Here is the program on YouTube! Enjoy!

TeaFlix Interview with David Spindel – YouTube

Born in Brooklyn, David M. Spindel discovered photography in high school and went on to study at Rochester Institute of Technology under legendary educators including Minor White and Ralph Hattersley. After apprenticing in New York, he opened his own studio in 1970, quickly gaining recognition from major advertising agencies.

Spindel’s commissions from Major League Baseball launched his signature still life photography, using hundreds of nostalgic memorabilia items to create visual time capsules. His work was self-published as posters and licensed worldwide, earning a devoted collector following. He also created limited edition projects with legends including Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Phil Rizzuto.

His humor shines through his Rebus photographs, visual wordplay pieces widely licensed for posters and apparel. Abbeville Press later signed Spindel to an eight book Major League Memories publishing series.

In 1980, John Lennon and Yoko Ono selected Spindel to photograph their return to the studio for the Double Fantasy sessions, making him the last photographer entrusted with documenting them together. His images have appeared worldwide and will be featured in Steven Soderbergh’s 2026 film John Lennon: The Last Interview.

Now based in Anthem, Arizona, Spindel continues telling stories through photography.

PHOTOS OF PAUL McCARTNEY AT THE LYCEUM THEATER, NEW YORK CITY: AUGUST 24, 1989.

A great time in 1989 for Paul McCartney at the Lyceum Theater:

Two very good friends, Billy Maura and me, John Bezzini, were both members of Paul’s fan club and Paul was always very generous to members of the fan club in terms of ticket offers and in 1989 Paul McCartney did a special performance on August 24th, 1989, at the Lyceum Theater in New York City at 149 West 45th Street in preparation for his upcoming tour. Bill and I were fortunate to get tickets to this event through the fan club. We patiently waited in line outside with our tickets from the fan club as Raquel Welch and Paul Schaefer brushed by to get to their VIP seating for the show. As we entered the theater the band was just ending their rehearsal for the night’s performance!

The show was scheduled for 6 PM but was delayed for quite some time before beginning. Finally, the lights dimmed and we knew instantly we were about to be listeners to a great show!

Paul did 19 numbers at the performance. We kept a list of the numbers performed at this special show that was done to promote his upcoming Flowers in the Dirt tour! Though we were up in the balcony section we did our best to take as many photographs as possible. Photos were taken by both William Maura and John Bezzini. We were shooting them from the balcony in low light, so they are not very clear, but they provided a strong memory to us of a wonderful show!

  1. Figure of 8
  2. Jet
  3. Rough Ride
  4. Got To Get You into My Life
  5. Band On The Run
  6. We Got Married
  7. Put It There
  8. Hello Goodbye (the chorus)
  9. Things We Said Today
  10. Summertime

Band Introductions:

Then came the introduction of the band members:

Robbie McIntyre-guitar

Wix Wickens-keyboards

Chris Whitten-drums

Linda McCartney-keyboards

Hamish Stuart-guitar

Paul McCartney on bass, guitar, and piano

The Concert resumes:

Then the concert resumed with these numbers:

11. Can’t Buy Me Love

12. I Saw Her Standing There

13. This One

14. My Brave face

15. Twenty Flight Rock

16. Long and Winding Road

17. Ain’t That a Shame

18. Let It Be

19. Coming Up

The show was tight, the musicianship and band members were spot on, and Paul’s vocals were superb! What more can you ask for?

That was it, we left NYC at 11:15 to head back to our respective homes in Connecticut!

Hope you enjoyed Bill Maura’s and Buzz’s memories of a wonderful show and concert back in the 1980s!

What is YOUR favourite Paul McCartney concert? When and where? Let me know in the comments.

HARRY NILSSON, JOHN LENNON, RINGO STARR, & YOKO ONO TRAVEL THE OLD DIRT ROAD

THE LOST WEEKEND, WALKING ON THE OLD DIRT ROAD AND BEYOND:

Nineteen Seventy-three and nineteen seventy-four was a time where the pressures of Beatles fans expectations of John Lennon were to contribute to problems in his marriage with Yoko Ono. John could seemingly not fathom why he was struggling so much with commercial success in his album releases. Many fans blamed Yoko for this decline in John’s commercial appeal. Yoko was certainly fully aware of what was going on, and she suggested that she and John should separate to relieve some of the public pressure they were experiencing. Yoko suggested and tried to persuade their assistant May Pang to watch over John during their separation. Little did she know that watching over would become a much deeper emotional tie.

During this time John and May travelled to the West Coast to record an oldies album with Phil Spector. The story behind that album and what happened during those sessions is legendary. The actual material was not to be officially released until 1975 with John’s Rock ‘n’ Roll album, rushed to release because of the illegal release of Roots issued by the late music publisher, Morris Levy! John was not satisfied with the quality of many of the Spector tracks and made new recordings to finish the album officially on Apple Records!

For a great book about this story please seek out this wonderful book by Jay Bergen:

AS THE YEARS GO BY- I CONTINUE TO COME ACROSS ITEMS OF INTEREST LIKE THIS: A HARRY NILSSON 45 OF A SONG HE CO-WROTE WITH JOHN LENNON WITH A PICTURE SLEEVE BY KLAUS VOORMANN:

Recently, I purchased the following 45 on eBay of this rare picture sleeve from Spain. It is a recording that Harry Nilsson had co-written with John Lennon which originally appeared on John’s 1974 album Walls and Bridges. Ironically, Nilsson’s cover of the Old Dirt Road track appeared on his Flash Harry LP released in 1980, John’s final year on the planet

Ultra Rare 7″ SPANISH (“MADE IN SPAIN”) SINGLE VINYL:

A side:

OLD DIRT ROAD (co-written by JOHN LENNON)

B side: RAIN (NOT THE BEATLES SONG)-This Rain song is a Nilsson composition!

This RARE 7″ SPANISH SINGLE is ONLY issued in SPAIN and very few copies pressed

The sketch of Harry Nilsson that appears on the cover of this 45 was by Beatles associate and friend, Klaus Voormann and you can read the credit to Klaus above the title of the song on the picture sleeve!

A RARE BEATLE AND NILSSON NOVELTY RECORD: The record is called Stand Up & Holler under the group name of The Foto-Fi Four

As many of you are aware, Harry Nilsson loved the Beatles and the Beatles loved Harry Nilsson

Here is a rare Beatles novelty record and was one of Nilsson’s first recordings and this is one 45 with sleeve and accompanying film which I wish I had in my collection. The record is called Stand Up & Holler under the group name of The Foto-Fi Four

The 45 novelty record:

A description of the record:

Nilsson’s 1980 Flash Harry album:

The back cover of the Flash Harry LP which featured details the involvement of Eric Idle, Klaus Voormann, Bobby Keys, Jim Gordon, Jim Horn, Jim Keltner, Dr. John, Ringo Starr, Richie Zito, Steve Cropper, Daniel Kortchmarr and Van Dyke Parks who have all worked on various Beatles-related projects over the years!

Following John Lennon’s murder in 1980, Harry Nilsson became a spirited fighter against hand-gun sales and an advocate for gun control. He released the following record which he sold at several fest for Beatles Fans before his passing in the 90s. I was to acquire my signed copy at a convention in the early 90s in New Jersey. Fest For Beatles Fan organizer and founder Mark Lapidos was instrumental in having this recording made!

Harry Nilsson – With A Bullet

IN 1974:

The photo of the cover of the Lennon-produced Harry Nilsson Album called Pussy Cats. Notice the drug reference that the two artists put on the cover. On the bottom of the album are two blocks with the letter D and S positioned on either side of a small rug. D–rug-S. I am surprised that Nilsson’s recording company for the LP, RCA, allowed the reference to go out at that time or maybe they just looked the other way. The LP featured the Lennon/Nilsson co-composition “Mucho Mungo/Mt Elga.” Many legendary musicians on this record though the reviews were not good!

Many journalists laid blame on Lennon for Harry Nilsson blowing out his voice at the recording sessions as his voice would never be the same again. That criticism was extremely unfair and uncalled for numerous reasons!

Harry Nilsson – Mucho Mungo / Mt. Elga (Audio)

Listen to this difference in this quadrophonic mix of the album on YouTube. On the first track Many Rivers to Cross, you will hear the string arrangement by Ken Ascher which helped inspire John to write #9 Dream on Walls and Bridges

Harry Nilsson – Pussy Cats Quadraphonic (Full Album – Quad Mix)

There are many bits you can hear on the quad mix that are not heard on the regular mix of the album! You will be amazed with the quad mix!

Track List:

Many Rivers To Cross 4:56
Subterranean Homesick Blues 3:17
Don’t Forget Me 3:37
All My Life 3:11
Old Forgotten Soldier 4:14
Save The Last Dance For Me 4:25
Mucho Mungo / Mt. Elga 3:43
Loop De Loop 3:27
Black Sails 3:15
Rock Around The Clock 3:12

A little after Pussy Cats was recorded, John’s Walls and Bridges album was recorded and released. It featured another co-written Lennon/Nilsson composition called “Old Dirt Road.”

Harry Nilsson passed away on January 15, 1994, from a combination of heart disease and diabetes.

NILSSON’S PROJECT WITH YOKO ONO IN THE 80s:

In the 1980s Harry Nilsson got involved in recording several cover versions of Yoko Ono songs. Three were chosen for Every Man Has A Woman release: Every Man Has a Woman is a tribute album to Yoko Ono for her 50th birthday.

Spotted this site on the Internet which featured the nine tracks that Harry Nilsson recorded for Yoko’s Every Man Has a Woman 1980s album:

This release was designed to celebrate Yoko’s 50th birthday!

Three of the tracks that Nilsson recorded of Yoko’s material turned up on the album” Silver Horse, Dream Love, and Loneliness!

A NILSSON 8-TRACK RARITY ACQUIRED FROM CHARLES ROSENAY-SIGNED BY NILSSON:

The disturbing element of 8-track tapes are that longer songs because of time were often separated/split into different tracks and you would hear the clack as the track made the transition!

One of Harry’s final albums called Sandman featuring a photo cover by former Beatles roadie Mal Evans!

Harry Nilsson’s dedication to Beatles associate, Mal Evans on my reference copy of the Sandman LP:

SON OF DRACULA-HARRY NILSSON AND RINGO STARR:

Like John Lennon and Harry Nilsson, Ringo Starr and Harry Nilsson became very close friends during that time frame and were involved with many musical projects together! This was one of those projects.

Apple films produced this movie featuring Harry Nilsson as Dracula and Ringo as Merlin the Magician. It got very poor reviews, but the soundtrack LP did a bit better!

Authors David Roberts and Neil Watson in December of 2021 published this very interesting book of fan and musician recollections of meeting this great singer and artist. Published by “This Day In Music Books,” the book is entitled “Harry & Me.”

I was fortunate to be able to post my recollection of meeting Harry Nilsson back in 1991. Have included that recollection from the book below.

My little contribution to the book written when I administered the Facebook Group “The Beatles in Print-Together and Solo.”

Around the time of John’s Mind Games LP, John and Harry Nilsson had a contest of writing a song with the same title. John’s version appeared on the Mind Games LP. Not sure where the 70s version of Harry’s is?

However, the musician author of the book below cites the story of him being asked to be a backing musician on a song Harry told him he co-wrote with John Lennon called You are Here which Andy Cahan has posted on SoundCloud. That SoundCloud link has many fascinating stories:

It is only fitting we close this post with John Lennon’s guide vocal to the song that the Platters had a great hit with called Only You. John Lennon suggested that Ringo record the song on his Goodnight Vienna LP and Ringo had a top ten hit with the record, Harry Nilsson sings backing vocals on the recordings of both John and Ringo.

JOHN LENNON AND DAVID BOWIE-THE ODD COUPLE?

OR WERE THEY?

How an Old Beatles Song Connected David Bowie With John Lennon

For those of the younger generations that do not know who the characters of Felix Unger and Oscar Madison were, they were characters in the hit television situation comedy in the US called, The Odd Couple. The series was based on the 1965 play The Odd Couple, written by Neil Simon. It was a situation comedy about two seemingly radically different personalities with different interests and the bizarre situations that their differences would lead to as they lived together in an urban apartment. One was a sportswriter who was very haphazard and somewhat negligent in dealing with things being in their proper place. The other character, Felix was a photographer and was rather obsessive as a neat-freak and was extremely neurotic and fussy. The television series ran from 1970 to 1975 and starred Tony Randall and Jack Klugman. When you think of rockstars John Lennon and David Bowie, do you see more similarities than differences? Does it surprise you that both men seemed to appreciate each other’s talents? Were John Lennon and David Bowie, the rockstar’s Odd Couple and actually radically different or were they more similar to being birds of a feather?

Both were the adventuresome sort, continually trying to stretch the boundaries of what was considered to be the acceptable norms for popular music. They both had banned album covers and they both loved to shock their audiences! Bowie has acknowledged John Lennon to be a primary inspiration saying that John was a pro at using elements of the so-called avant garde and making it seem acceptable to the masses in his music. Bowie was also impressed with John’s wit and sense of humor. He was amused when asking John what he thought of Bowie’s early style of “glam rock.” John quickly responded, “It’s just rock ‘n’ roll with lipstick on it.”

Ironically, John Lennon was introduced to David Bowie at a party by Hollywood actress, Elizabeth Taylor. This encounter is wonderfully described in May Pang’s book called, Loving John as well as the incident where Bowie played his Young Americans LP endlessly and repetitively to Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and May Pang.

As well as the May Pang book, the story is also recalled in the book Come Together: Lennon and McCartney in the Seventies by Richard White

John Lennon, May Pang, the McCartneys meet Bowie in 1975 : r/beatles

Both David and John at specific points in their history were not averse to excessive substance abuse with the expectations that those substances would give them significant musical inspiration! Both artists were well-read despite not having been highly formally educated in school. Both had interest in art and politics as well as music and had wide definitions of what would fall into those categories! Both men seemed to have childhoods that had strong elements of unhappiness! Both artists seemed like they were on a lifelong search for something elusive that they were unable to attain! Despite public perception of the image of both men being as self-confident and assertive as individuals, one gets the notion that in reality those perceptions were examples of public bravado. Both men often exhibited great sensitivity and many of their songs and interviews revealed they were actually very insecure and required attention and acknowledgement from others to help complete their attempts of self-discovery!

For some reason, which many McCartney fans find to be unfathomable and unreasonable, Bowie seemed to prefer Mr. Lennon’s music and a link among the many links below seems to substantiate that claim. It probably had something to do with Paul’s intense preference for commercialism and the desire to always be at the top of the charts with the hits and his wonderful talents of producing melodic singalong style of music, whereas John’s music was less predictable, certainly not as overtly commercial, and had many unpredictable time signature changes! Bowie also appreciated John’s ability with lyrics and wordplay, a talent that he also possessed!

Both men continually went through changes in both image and physical appearance over the years. Bowie was continually changing the characters he would play such as:

The Thin White Duke, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Halloween Jack, the Thin White Duke, and the Blind Prophet.

Conversely, look at the many hairstyle and appearance changes of Mr. Lennon had over the years. Both men loved to shock their respective publics and to try to stay one step ahead of them and often go well beyond their audience expectations to appear as trailblazers which I believe gave both men great pleasure and satisfaction! At times it would also make them chuckle as they would love to keep their audiences guessing as to what they meant in some of their musical numbers!

I could be wrong, but it does not appear that David Bowie ever covered a Paul McCartney song other than being a backup singer of Let It Be at the Live-Aid concert: Paul McCartney – Let It Be (Live Aid 1985)

BOWIE’S LENNON COVERS: MOTHER

Originally this was a Bowie cover designed for a special Lennon Tribute release to be put together by Yoko. This idea was abandoned and Bowie later issued his version of Mother as a limited edition 45 with a Bob Dylan flip side which I purchased on eBay! There is also a Sinead O’Connor cover of Mind Games on YouTube that was also intended for that abandoned Lennon tribute album!

Some people perceive that Bowie admired this Lennon number as his childhood was not particularly happy as well…
