Just got my copy in the mail of the wonderful new volume of the John Lennon narrative being passionately created and worked on by Jude Southerland Kessler. Jude has taken on the arduous, yet rewarding task of creating a day by day chronology of John’s life in order for viewers to be able to understand the creation of the complex personality of one of the 20th century’s most dynamic and misunderstood figures! Since Jude began this project many years ago, awaiting each volume of her John Lennon narrative has become an eagerly anticipated ritual. We know where the story is heading but still living with the hope of a different ending. That is the literary gift of Jude Southerland Kessler. John becomes alive again on every page and through her intense research and heavily documented through heavily footnoted text, we know that this work is not a personal fantasy of Jude’s. Her series of books bring you there as if you are a standby viewer watching the events unfold. The narrative is extremely credible and realistic and that is such a difficult task for conversations that may never had been recorded. The latest volume deals with the 2nd half of 1965 which some have argued was actually the peak year of Beatlemania. The Beatles were on another American tour and this was the year they got to meet their hero, Elvis Presley! They were also to play their historic Shea Stadium concert!

Originally thought to become a 9 book series, each volume is so heavily detailed and documented, I personally expect the series to extend over the ten volume mark. Once it is completed, Jude’s contribution to both John’s and the Beatles story will be forever assured. I fully intend to make sure that I will get every volume of this incredible book series as glowing examples of the jewels that the hard work of Jude Southerland Kessler have accomplished!

All of the books in the Lennon series are voluminous in the 600-800 page range. Jude must be hard pressed to ever leave or depart from her computer. Readers can never fully realize the work that goes behind the creating of this narrative especially with the level of detail that Jude demands with her task!

A personal thank you goes out to my late friend Billy Maura for taking all of the photos of Julian that appear in this post and to his wife Faye Maura, who kindly gave me the permission to use the photos in the post!

A show I went to with a couple of co-workers and friends on July 29, 1999 at Toad’s Place in New Haven, Connecticut. Toad’s Place is a club where the Rolling Stones played a surprise gig. The club is a “stones throw” away (no pun intended) from Yale University!!!

Needless to say, the show was excellent. Julian’s band was tight, and Julian had an excellent stage presence interacting frequently with the audience and his singing pipes are golden. As time has gone by, I sincerely regret his personal decision to virtually give up doing live appearances!

The Highlights:

I personally love Julian’s Photograph Smile album and eagerly looked forward to seeing some of the great songs on the album played live. In addition to that, loved hearing the excellent songs Saltwater, Too Late for Goodbyes, and Valotte being performed live was also a great thrill. However my favorite moment of the concert was hearing a song entitled No One But You, an unreleased song having to so with the prospects of self-reliance. Someone has posted a performance of the song on YouTube and for the life of me I can not understand why Julian has not yet made the decision to issue it for public consumption. It is a beautiful song that deserves to be heard by many more people.

I believe Julian has given up or drastically reduced his cigarette smoking as health concerns become primary to all of us as we get older.

Many years later in 2021, a very interesting and entertaining book was issued about stories of the various artists that made guest or surprise appearances at the Toad’s Place venue including the Stones and Bruce Springsteen.

In the 1960’s there was a teen magazine at a California radio station with the call letters of KRLA. The magazine that the radio station produced was entitled KRLA BEAT. In the 60s there were quite a few issues of the magazine which featured a Beatle on the cover. In 2016, a book was published compiling most of the Beatles features that the magazine published during those years. It is well worth getting for your Beatles print collections. Collections compiled in this book serve as superb time capsules like the scrapbooks that Beatles fans kept prior to the digital age. In the future I plan to show you some of the contents of the 100 or so Beatles scrapbooks that I compiled in my personal collection prior to the world takeover of the internet.

This issue appeared only a couple of days after the Pepper release:

“Pepper” was scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on June 1, 1967, but a leak caused an earlier release on May 26, 1967.

Another revelation that is food for Beatles trivia enthusiasts as there are always caveats associated with the “pure truth” concerning official release dates!

From Reddit-The official release date for The Beatles’ album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” was June 1, 1967, in the UK according to History.com and the band’s official website TheBeatles.com. While some sources list May 26th as the release date, this is often associated with a partial release or a release in certain regions, like the UK .

Put that one in your pipe and smoke it! LOL!

I love hearing and learning virtually out-of-the-blue about special signed and numbered limited editions of books that are written by special authors like the prolific and talented, Luca Perasi. Special Beatle fan and chief editor of the fantastic Paul McCartney magazine entitled Maccazine, Edward Eikelenboom, worked out an arrangement and collaborated with Luca Perasi in order to issue a special 30 copy only signed and numbered edition of his latest book about the various recorded works of the legendary Paul McCartney. Being a collector sometimes means being at the right place at the right time. For example, when I learned of this special edition by email, I quickly requested to purchase the last signed and numbered copy for my collection. With special limited edition signed and numbered books you often need to act very quickly to ensure getting a copy. I always try to obtain the last numbered copy as it is far more difficult to acquire copy #1 of any limited edition book. I am not always successful in attempts to get the last numbered copy, but in this circumstance I was fortunate to be able to acquire copy #30. With a small limited edition amount of copies, you also need to be very lucky or happen to be around when the books become available from the source that you acquire the book from. Putting the signed and numbered aspects of the book aside, Luca Perasi is an author whose work I admire and his research skills are excellent and without parallel, it is the best of both worlds.

Luca presents a strong and convincing case in his book about the merits of this McCartney release. I must admit though, that I was never a big fan of Press to Play prior to reading his piece and Luca has successfully made me return to the release and appreciate it far more than I originally did when it became a part of our McCartney archives! Well done, Luca!

A Little Fun to end the post

Though McCartney may appear to have a clear Stranglehold on the gift of melody. He has the good instincts to know that Good Times Coming is a distinct possibility for humankind, but only if we just take the time to Feel the Sun and to simply Touch your Pretty Little Head when contemplating the situation. He knows the Footprints in the snow give him the early warning signs and permission to say Move Over Busker to his competition. That may make them Angry but it may Press them into creative action knowing that Only Love Remains when you play the right cards and improve your musical skills. However Absurd this may sound to you, if you Talk More Talk and say all the right things you will realize I was just having a little fun with discussing Luca’s new book and Paul’s song titles from the Press to Play LP.

At the risk of being seen as ignorant, I must admit that the first time that I saw John Lennon’s appearance of Instant Karma on the Top of the Pops program, I did not recognize one of the band members. It was only much later that I was to learn of the considerable talents and achievements of the man named B.P. Fallon who was to appear in the video.

Bernard Patrick Fallon was born August 24, 1946, later to become more commonly known as B.P. Fallon. Part of his significant list of achievements was as an Irish DJ, a journalist, an author of several books, an actor, a photographer and a musician.

His introduction to a Beatle came with John Lennon granting him a 3-part interview for Melody Maker back in 1969 during the Amsterdam Bed-In. His Beatles association was deepened when he later worked at Apple for Derek Taylor. The Melody Maker interview was in 3 parts. Two of the three issues are shown here as they are a part of my personal collection, thanks to eBay! Special thanks are also extended to Chip Madinger for providing the particulars of the info regarding the three issues of MM featuring the B.P. Fallon interview with John and Yoko from 1969!

There were also ‘rumors’ circulating that B.P. happened to be a marijuana tester for one of the Beatles, though not for John as many might have expected! You will hear that story by Mr. Fallon himself on one of the links provided elsewhere on this post.

In 1970, while John Lennon was preparing a live vocal appearance of his song, Instant Karma, on the UK TV program, Top pf the Pops, John asked B.P., who was backstage, to appear in the video with him. It fit in perfectly with John and Yoko’s idea that the Plastic Ono Band was a conceptual band and that anyone can be a member of the band. (You are the Plastic Ono Band!)

To further illustrate J and Y’s concept of the POB:

The front cover of my personal copy of the July 5, 1969 issue of NME which featured John’s design of Yoko’s concept of flexibility in the perception of the make-up of their conceptual band. The plastic flexible containers with the tape machine and microphones and a phone directory indicating that virtually anyone could be a member of the band.

In any case, B.P was in two versions of the performance of Instant Karma. One version in which he appears in a hat borrowed from an audience member where he holds a bass guitar during the performance, while Mal Evans plays a tambourine and Klaus Voormann is also on bass. In the other video, B.P. plays the tambourine apparently the one used originally by Mal in the other video.

One common theme running throughout B.P.’s career are his strong Irish roots which he is obviously very proud of. It is a theme repeated in so many sources of information about the man!

There is another Beatles-related connection to B.P as he was one of the writers of a tribute song to the late Wings guitarist, Henry McCullough. His song to Henry details the admiration he had for the musician and many of the prominent musicians that Henry worked with.

In this version of the Top pf the Pops program BP Fallon has a bass guitar though the only thing that is live is Lennon’s vocal of the song. John had asked B.P. backstage to help him with the video by pretending to play bass. He told B.P. that anyone can be a member of the POB. (A conceptual band)! Klaus Voormann is also seen playing bass in the video. In one version of the video we also see the late Mal Evans (the Gentle Giant) and friend of the Beatles playing tambourine

Beatles Hodgepodge posts on this blog are designed to present unusual (or not as common print-related items) that have a Beatles connection that potentially many fans, especially those of a more casual nature, may have not been exposed to before!

First of all I would like to acknowledge my good friend across the pond, Seamus Hayes. On numerous occasions he has helped me acquire items from eBay in the UK that eBay UK sellers refuse to sell to prospective buyers in the US due to high postage costs. I have heard many similar feelings from individuals in the UK who feel the same way about buying items in the US that they may want for their collections and some US sellers refuse to ship there. I suggest that both countries revise their eBay policies to give the prospective buyer the choice as to whether they are willing to pay the significantly higher cost of shipping the item internationally. That would at least allow the buyer to make the decision if they then wish to purchase the item.

Seamus Hayes acquired this item for me because he was aware that I love special one-off type of magazines, especially from 1964, that have a special slant concerning the Beatles conquering of the world in 1964. The date of the magazine is special because it was in February of 1964 that the Beatles arrived in America and appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. The special and appealing nature regarding the Psychology issue shown below is that it is not designed or intended as a teen periodical. It is more academic-centered and the primary audience is adults which is highly unusual for an early 1964 magazine dealing with the Beatles. That oddity alone made me want to acquire the magazine for the collection! If America had gotten the opportunity to view this UK magazine prior to the Beatles arrival, perhaps we would have been better prepared for what was about to invade and conquer our shores!

I love print items that have a Beatles connection to them and that were not manufactured or distributed on a mass scale. I bought a Magic Christian promo booklet on eBay promoting the Ringo Starr/Peter Sellers film. The program gave a synopsis of the plot of the movie and some details of Paul McCartney’s musical contribution to the film with the song he wrote for Badfinger entitled, Come and Get It!

Love these one-off Beatles specialty magazines. This one was recently put together and published by TV Guide in 2025 and features Beatle-related puzzles, trivia questions, word searches, crosswords and scrambled words, just to name a few categories of pure fun. I picked up this copy of the magazine at a local Barnes and Noble. I personally enjoy the challenge of seeing if the various games that appear in the magazine can stump me!

Loved the cover photo of this 2005 Mexican magazine called Marvin and I bought it for the collection primarily due to the cover on eBay! Usually my decision to purchase a foreign language Beatles-related magazine or book is a result of the photography contained in the title!

Acquiring the signed item below this paragraph recently has given me an idea about expanding my side of the Beatles print blog to include items from the 100 or so Beatles scrapbooks that I maintained over the years until the digital age kicked in. This particular item is a signed item by all three members of Paddy Klaus and Gibson. (Paddy (Patrick) Chambers, Klaus Voormann and Gibson Kemp). It is interesting to note the brief mention at the bottom of the signed photo that the Beatles recommended that Brian Epstein manage the trio. Two of the members were engaged to Astrid, first Kalus Voormann and when that relationship ended, Gibson Kemp. Gibson Kemp actually married Astrid in 1967.

A Paddy Klaus and Gibson performance photo that I also acquired on eBay!

This EP was released many years later and was Paddy Chambers Klaus Voormann, Gibson Kemp. Paddy, Klaus and Gibson’s collection of 45s. I bought a copy of this collection from the great book publisher Apcor who is responsible for the fantastic “A is for Apple” book series. The cover design was by Klaus Voormann who had used a similar design for a recording by another group called The Eyes.

Very rarely do I acquire re-print of posters but this one simply appealed too much to me on many levels. This 1965 poster mentions a two-date Edinburgh performance organized by Brian Epstein . The Beatles collections on this poster are enormous. Paul many years later was to write a song for the Everly Brothers called On the Wings of a Nightingale. The Everlys harmonies inspired the Beatles vocal singing styles. Cilla Black was a Cavern cloakroom attendant who became a popular hit singer managed by Epstein. Lionel Blair, dance choreographer who appeared in A Hard Day’s Night. Billy J. Kramer covered many Beatles songs and he had a few specific songs written for him by the Beatles. Finally we have Paddy, Klaus and Gibson who was recommended to Epsten by the Beatles. Paddy had many Liverpool band connections including The Big Three. Klaus Voormann was a friend of the Beatles since the early 60s and has been a lifelong friend since. He designed their Revolver album cover and backed all of the solo Beatles on bass during their solo careers. He was in love with Astrid K. but later Astrid was to fall in love with Beatles friend and band member Stu Sutcliffe who died unexpectedly in 1962. Drummer Gibson Kemp in 1967 married Astrid and that marriage was not to last that long.

Just the basic summary and description from above demonstrates how complicated life can really be as relationships can change, evolve, deepen, dissolve and sometimes even disappear!
