MORE JOHN LENNON IMAGINE LP SESSION PLAYERS AND THEIR SIGNATURES!

This is the final installment of many of the session players that played on John Lennon Imagine LP sessions.

Great sax player King Curtis played on the LP on 2 of the album tracks, It’s So Hard and I Don’t Want To Be a Soldier.

Soon after returning to NYC from the UK, he was murdered in front of his New York apartment on August 13, 1971.

King Curtis was part of one of the opening acts at Shea Stadium for the Beatles historic concert in 1965.

MIKE PINDER-A MOODY BLUE

The Beatles post breakup involved Denny Laine formerly of the Moody Blues joining Wings. However, there was another Moody Blue that played on an ex-Beatle ‘s album and that was Moody Blues co-founder, Mike Pinder who played on Lennon’s Imagine album.

Pinder died at his home in northern California on 24 April 2024, at the age of 82. He had been suffering for some years from dementia (see Wikipedia entry below)

Many of the articles I have read about Pinder give him the credit to introducing the Mellotron to John Lennon and the Beatles resulting in Paul’s use of it to be used in the intro of Strawberry Fields Forever.

STILL NEED TO FIND THESE SIGNATURES FOR THE IMAGINE COLLECTION:

IF YOU CAN HELP ME FIND THESE SIGNATURES FOR MY COLLECTION I WOULD BE EXTREMELY GRATEFUL

STILL NEED TO FIND– Rod Lynton. Steve Brendell, Jim Gordon (deceased) and Jon Barham as the remaining signatures that I need to complete the collection of autographs from the IMAGINE session musicians.

Do you have any suggestions about where I may be able to find these autographs to purchase without breaking the bank?

Hope you enjoyed these bits of information about some of the players that added their talents to John Lennon’s epic Imagine album.

Some of the backing musicians on that LP are better known than others and I hope there was some information on this blog post that you were not aware of before….

JOHN TOUT OF RENAISSANCE & TED TURNER OF WISHBONE ASH ON THE IMAGINE LP! PLUS JOHN BARHAM’S BEATLES, LENNON, HARRISON ASSOCIATION!!!

This blog post will attempt to discuss some of the other musicians that may not be as well-known to Beatles fans as the standard group of session musicians that were often used by John, George, and Ringo on their solo recordings such as Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voormann, Alan White that also appeared on John Lennon’s Imagine LP.

Many of the additional musicians that are the subject of this post and the post that will follow were members of other prominent bands when they were asked to play on John’s LP. This post deals with three vinyl LPs that I have recently acquired for my collection that have something to do with individuals that participated in or contributed to the Imagine sessions.

As many members of this blog are aware I also collect the signatures and recordings of other musicians that had some type of association with the Beatles or solo Beatles story. This post will deal with the following individuals, keyboard player and composer John Tout, songwriter & guitar player Ted Turner and composer, arranger, John Barham, who plays several instruments but is primarily known as a musical conductor and arranger.

John Tout-from the band Renaissance played on the Imagine LP

In my search of the signatures of many of the backing musicians on the John Lennon Imagine LP, I recently acquired a signed Renaissance Novella album which had one of those signatures of the late John Tout who passed away in 2015.

Tout was also a member of the group Rupert’s People that featured guitarist Rod Lynton, and drummer Steve Brendell who also played on the Imagine LP.

The following information is from Wikipedia:

From the Renaissance album entitled Novellathis track features the keyboard playing of John Tout and Tout co-wrote the song The Sisters with Dunford and Thatcher and the orchestral arrangements on the LP were by none other than Richard Hewson who orchestrated the strings on the Beatles Long and Winding Road on the Let It Be album and after Paul McCartney cooled down later, he asked Richard Hewson to score his Thrillington album!

Ted Turner (guitarist) – Wikipedia

Prior to Wishbone Ash, Turner played with the Birmingham band, King Biscuit.[2] In 1969, he auditioned to join Colosseum but didn’t make the cut.

Turner joined Wishbone Ash in 1969 after answering an advertisement in an issue of Melody Maker magazine published by Martin Turner. He and Andy Powell became known for their twin lead guitar playing. Extensive touring followed, whilst also recording the albums Wishbone Ash, Pilgrimage, and Argus. He left the band after their fourth album, Wishbone Four, in 1974.

In 1971, Turner was invited to play on John Lennon’s Imagine, on “Crippled Inside” and “How Do You Sleep”, playing acoustic guitar on both tracks. Other sessions included artists Cilla Black, George Harrison and Al Stewart.

JOHN BARHAM-PROFILE

John Barham remains as one of the more difficult autographs for my collection to obtain. I have looked all over for something signed by him and my searches have been futile. Let me know if any of you can help with this search! Thank you

Saw this John Barham profile on the record collecting service called DISCOGS

Profile:
“English classical pianist, composer, arranger, producer, and educator, best known for his orchestration of George Harrison albums such as “All Things Must Pass” (1970) and for his association with Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Born in the 1940s in London, England, UK.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Music. Most often in the role of orchestral or choral arranger, Barham also contributed to albums such as “Let It Be”, “Imagine”, and “Footprint” in the early 1970s. His projects as a music producer during the same period included three albums by progressive rock band Quintessence (3), and he has worked on film or TV soundtracks for directors Otto Preminger, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Jonathan Miller (2). Other artists with whom Barham has worked include Elton John, André Previn, Phil Spector, Roger Daltrey, Yoko Ono and Jackie Lomax. He taught at the Trinity College Of Music, London.”

This is one of the LPs I recently acquired that are the focus of this post. It was released a couple of years after Imagine and All Things Must Pass with an emphasis on mixing eastern and Western styles. John Barham was a big devotee of the music of India, and he plays keyboard on this LP which feature liner notes by both George Harrison and Ravi Shankar!

Jon Barham’s connection with the rare Apple LP “El Topo”-when you type El Topo in your search field, this description comes up:

The “El Topo” soundtrack by Alejandro Jodorowsky was released on Apple Records in 1971. The soundtrack features a unique blend of styles, including Tibetan Buddhist thighbone trumpets, chamber orchestra pieces, and avant-garde elements, reflecting Jodorowsky’s eclectic musical vision. The album is known for its spiritual and artistic goals, showcasing a wide range of musical genres and compositions. You can listen to the soundtrack on platforms like Apple Music“:”

John Barham’s involvement with the El Topo soundtrack: This information is from ABKCO Music & Records, Inc.
“John Barham’s involvement with the El Topo soundtrack is significant as he was the conductor who brought the film’s unique musical style to life. His collaboration with Jodorowsky’s El Topo is a testament to Barham’s versatility as a musician and his ability to adapt to the demands of a film’s soundtrack. The soundtrack’s blend of rock ‘n’ roll, Eastern philosophy, and Judeo-Christian symbolism is a hallmark of Barham’s work, which has left a lasting impact on the indie cinema scene and the film industry as a whole.

Other Beatles-related recordings from John Barham:

Text from Wikipedia: John Barham – Wikipedia
“Barham also worked on Harrison’s projects with acts signed to the Beatles’ Apple record label.[34] Among these releases was Is This What You Want? (1969) by Jackie Lomax,[35] That’s the Way God Planned It (1969) by Billy Preston,[36] and Radha Krishna Temple (London)’s 1970 hit single “Govinda”.[37] The latter was a musical adaptation of a sacred Hindu poem from the Satya Yuga.[38] Through his connection with Harrison, Barham also played harpsichord on Yoko Ono’s “Who Has Seen the Wind?”,[39] released in February 1970 as the B-side to John Lennon’s Spector-produced single “Instant Karma!”[40]

Following the success of All Things Must Pass, Barham contributed to Ronnie Spector’s “Try Some, Buy Some” single,[41] Lennon’s song “Jealous Guy” (from Imagine) and Gary Wright’s album Footprint, all recorded in 1971.[42] He has said of working with Wright and Harrison that “there was a strong [musical] rapport among the three of us” and describes Wright’s song “Love to Survive” as “one of the most emotionally powerful love songs that I have ever worked on”.[43] In his book Phil Spector: Out of His Head, music journalist Richard Williams writes of Barham’s orchestration on “Try Some, Buy Some”: “[The strings and mandolins] sweep and soar in great blocks of sound, pirouetting around each other like a corps de ballet in slow motion. The closing portions of the orchestral arrangement are breathtaking, displaying a geometrical logic which makes use of suspended rhythms drawn out to screaming point.”[44]

Production for Quintessence and Jugalbandi album
Barham became involved in music production in the late 1960s, working with Quintessence.[34][45] The latter were a Notting Hill-based progressive rock band who, like Harrison,[46] incorporated a Hindu-aligned spiritual message in their music.[47] Barham produced and provided arrangements on the band’s first three albums – In Blissful Company, Quintessence and Dive Deep – all released on Island Records between 1969 and 1971.[48] Reviewing Quintessence (1970) in Melody Maker, Richard Williams described Barham’s production as “quite superb”.[49] In a 2014 feature article on Quintessence, for Record Collector, Colin Harper praised Barham’s contributions to the band’s work, labelling him “their very own George Martin … honing their onstage magic into sublime studio sculptures”.[48] Following singer Shiva Shankar Jones’s departure from Quintessence,[47] Barham produced his new band’s eponymous album, Kala (1972).[34]

In 1973, Barham and Indian sarod player Aashish Khan released an album on Elektra Records, titled Jugalbandi[34][50] – the word commonly used for duets in Hindustani classical music.[51][52] Produced by Barham, with tabla accompaniment from Zakir Hussain,[34] the album featured a piece called “Piano Solos”,[50] on which he combined the ragas Nat Bhairav, Brindavani Tilang, Marwa and Mishra-Kalavati.[53] Asked in a 2009 online interview about the long-unavailable Jugalbandi, Barham said: “I haven’t composed any more music like that, although I still do compose regularly, but in a more Western style.”[45]

With the prominent assistance of both the Wikipedia and Discogs websites, I hope you have enjoyed this discussion of some of the other musicians and musical arrangers that have contributed so richly to the wonderful legacy of the Beatles and the solo Beatles! I love learning about the other players in the Beatles story especially in the post-breakup time frame and I hope you do as well!

RICHARD HEWSON, McCARTNEY & THE BEATLES- HISTORICAL CONTROVERSY REGARDING “THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD”

Much controversy surrounded Richard Hewson’s involvement with the Beatles story. When Phil Spector arrived on the scene to remedy the displeasure the band had with the original Get Back/Let It Be session tapes, he had Richard Hewson, Brian Rogers, and John Barham handle the new string, orchestral , and choral backings on several of the songs. Many Beatles fans to this day say that that was not what the Beatles had wanted in their original concept of the LP which was slated to be a return to their rock ‘n’ roll basics. (The raw Beatles without overdubs) Obviously there was a big conflict here as Paul in particular objected to the production values on The Long and Winding Road which irritated and angered him as it was done without his permission. He thought the string and the vocal background choir were unwarranted and went against his vision of the song. Ringo has claimed in interviews that all four of the Beatles did sign off on the album’s release, however. In the ultimate irony, years later Paul when performing the Long and Winding Road live it had a very lush arrangement of the song somewhat similar to the Beatles album version. My supposition was that it probably was a “control” based issue in the power politics of the group!

The Long and Winding Road: The Controversy Behind the Beatles’ Final Number-One Hit – Our Mind On Music

Beatles Arranger Wasn’t Paid Much for ‘The Long and Winding Road’

Going for a song – the North-East man paid just £40 for helping to create a Beatles classic | The Northern Echo

From WIKIPEDIA this is noted:

The Long and Winding Road – Wikipedia

“On 2 April, Spector sent each of the Beatles an acetate of the completed album with a note saying: “If there is anything you’d like done to the album, let me know and I’ll be glad to help … If you wish, please call me about anything regarding the album tonight”,[33] along with a lengthy letter justifying his changes.[34] All four Beatles, including McCartney, sent Spector a telegram giving their approval.[18][35]”

This is why we must be careful in judging some of the history shared with us as FACT concerning certain events that we take as being the gospel truth. Everyone emphasizes their own predispositions as to what actually happened especially when there are conflicting views as to the events that may have occurred. In my opinion, if the Beatles really did not want the album to come out as it did, it WOULD NOT have been released. They wiped their hands, tired of all of the business hassles, and it ultimately came out despite their personal disappointments at the time.

Today, on this blog post we want to present Richard Hewson’s involvement with the Beatles and eventually with Paul McCartney.

Initially, here is Richard Hewson’s string arrangement of The Long and Winding Road that appeared on the Let It Be album.

The Beatles – The Long And Winding Road (Isolated Orchestra)

This is the official video of the song on YouTube

The Beatles – The Long And Winding Road (Official Video)

The public at large however made The Long and Winding Road extremely successful in sales, and it did attain #1 status. Richard Hewson felt the pain of angering Paul McCartney about his string arrangement for the song. Its commercial success tempered the hurt that Hewson felt when McCartney criticized Hewson and did not work with him until McCartney approached Hewson and asked him to do the string arrangements on his Thrillington album. Obviously, McCartney realized that Mr. Hewson had talent or he never would have approached Hewson to do Thrillington after his intense displeasure he had with the Let it Be album. I have heard some comments that McCartney was not displeased with the strings but with the chorale background singers!

The collaboration between Richard Hewson and Mary Hopkin on the song “Those Were the Days” was a significant moment in music history. Hewson’s arrangement brought a unique and nostalgic sound to the song, which had already been a hit in the UK and Canada. Mary Hopkin’s debut single, produced by Paul McCartney, became a number one hit in the US, showcasing the song’s widespread appeal. The song’s success was a testament to the power of music and the talent of those involved in its creation.

P.S.

What are your opinions about Richard Hewson’s string arrangement of The Long and winding Road? Would love to hear your feelings and sentiments about it. I may be in the minority, but I love the strings as I believe the song has a majestic tone and therefore deserves the majestic treatment that it received. I realize that conflicts with the notion that the creator of the work should be able to decide on what the finished product should be. I remember when a few local radio stations played an early acetate made by Glyn Johns on the air and that version of the song did not impress me as much as the official album release. Well, that is the beauty of music, we now have both versions to choose from! Do I like the original bare bones treatment of the song as well? Yes, there are elements of that version that I enjoy but I do feel more emotionally moved by the version of the song with strings! The 45 of The Long and Winding Road reached #1 in the USA, so obviously there were significant amounts of people that enjoyed the released version with strings. Whatever floats your boat!

Be happy and be healthy!

NEW BEATLES FAN FILM-A LOVE LETTER TO THE BEATLES-SIMON WEITZMAN (DIRECTOR & PRODUCER)

Cover of the DVD:

FILM BACKGROUND:

I first met the producer and director of this film, Simon Weitzman, several years ago at a New Jersey Fest for Beatles Fans. The first thing that impressed me was his down-to-earth personality and professional bearing. The second element that made an impression was his dedication to producing a wonderful film about the followers (or fans) of the Beatles whose love for the band has become a crossgenerational phenomenon. I had first learned about Simon through his production of a few excellent quality Beatles books that he had collaborated with artist, Paul Skellett. The superb quality of those projects had me hooked. When I was on Facebook, I spent a lot of time communicating with Simon and I can truly say that he exhibits the sensitivity and the perceptions that are important ingredients to any successful artistic endeavor regarding the Beatles. He has also produced a documentary about Beatles associate Chris O’Dell who George Harrison once wrote a song about and an upcoming documentary about Mark Lewisohn’s Evolver lecture tour is also about to hit the market.

Simon is one of those people that I have met over the years in Beatles-related circles that I have much respect and admiration for. I recently received my copy of his latest film that he has worked so hard to complete and to bring to the marketplace. I enjoyed this film very much and I know you will too!

Love Magic Power Danger Bliss: Yoko Ono and the Avant-Garde Diaspora- by Paul Morley- Hardcover – Mar. 12, 2026

Blog member Seamus Hayes knows of my interest in books that even have a peripheral connection with the Beatles or when the subject of the book has some form of an association or relationship with a member of the band. When the books are available that are signed by the author, that usually has a greater appeal to me. This is a forthcoming book about the work of Yoko Ono that certainly may fit the bill of type of book described above. He recently sent me the information about this upcoming title by Paul Morley. The interest in knowing about the existence of these books are important to me as I also enjoy sharing the knowledge of these new titles with fellow members of the blog!

Bestselling author Paul Morley’s cultural history of the twentieth century Avant-Garde movement, told through the life and work of one of its most influential and acclaimed stalwarts.

“The story of the twentieth-century avant-garde is a story of resistance, of the outsider, of strangeness, of individual freedom, of rejecting the ordinary and overcoming marginalisation through self-invention. It is also a story that can be told through the prism of one of its most renowned figureheads: Yoko Ono.

From her early life escaping aristocratic Japanese society and the horrors of World War II to adventurous and productive exile in New York, Ono’s work built upon the histories of Dada, surrealism, Zen Buddhism, and experimental music. A significant influence on the elusive Fluxus artistic network, she was connected to all its major personalities. Pursuing dreams of revolutionary liberation and aiming to recreate shattered post-war reality through performance, art and text, she established a legacy – despite her tumultuous personal life – as one of the most visionary artists and activists of her generation.

Marking the intersection of biography, cultural history and artistic meditation, Love Magic Power Danger Bliss explores the deep history and vitality of the 20th century avant-garde movement and the inspiring, provocative figure who became its most celebrated, most misunderstood icon.”
