ALL YOU NEED IS HULL – THE BEATLES AND ME

Once again, All You Need Is Hull is the type of Beatles book that I love to acquire for the collection as these type of books help to serve as the wonderful time capsules that they are. Many members of newer generations can not imagine what those times were like and in fact they have their doubts, believing it is just the old timers reveling in nostalgia. The recollections of memories from some of the first generation Beatles fans helps to preserve those precious moments for posterity.

These books are typically harder to find and this enhances their place in the collection. Often, they are privately or independently published, thus limiting their circulation!

Synopsis of the book written by NICK BOLDOCK on 2nd of May 2016

Author Lynda Hill tells all…

“In 2012, I was invited as a guest on the “Burnsy” show on BBC Radio Humberside. It was to be a “Beatles day” to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the release of the single Love Me Do.

Although I had told my story of meeting The Beatles on other shows previously, it became apparent that, due to the number of calls coming in from listeners, that I wasn’t the only person in Hull that had a story to tell of a brush with one or more of the Beatles.

In August 2013 I heard a Liverpool man called Dean Johnson being interviewed on BBC Radio Humberside. He was asking for anyone who had a Beatles story to tell to contact him; I did, and after hearing it he said he would like to include it in a new chapter of his book The Beatles And Me.

Remembering the people who I had heard previously, I told him that there were many more stories here in Hull. He suggested that we collaborate on a new book and call it All You Need Is Hull.  I set about tracing the people; I interviewed them and wrote down their stories. At this point I should say that I have never written a story before, so I was rather nervous about the whole thing. I had piles of discarded efforts until I eventually felt that I was on the right track. I emailed the stories to Dean and he was happy with them.

In January 2014 Dean was extremely busy with other projects and I was being asked when the book would be published. As he lives in the North West I asked him if he would consider letting me take over the book and continue with it alone here in Hull. He agreed, and I continued interviewing and writing.

I had to then look at publishing and printing. This I found to be expensive, so I found a printer whose finished products looked good, and I set about the layout myself. I searched for images that would match the stories and asked the contributors if I could take photographs of their memorabilia. The Hull Daily Mail and the Hull History Centre were really helpful with my requests and it all seemed to be looking good.

I had it proof read, and by August a friend had set the pages with the images and stories for me. It was ready for printing.

Both myself and the contributors, are delighted that the stories of The Beatles’ visits to Hull at the dawn of Beatlemania, are now in print, and a chapter of the music scene in Hull in the 60s is recorded.”

EARLY BEATLES VENUES AROUND MERSEYSIDE

As stated numerous times on this blog, it is often the independent Beatles book publications that hold the most fascination for me as a collector. They are issued in much lower quantities, are more difficult to find and purchase, and often they have pictures and/or stories that are not available in the mass market books. I love these three titles written by author, Ray O’Brien. The first two were independent publications and the third book was published by Bluecoat Press. If you are interested in looking for these titles for your collection, they can often be found either on Ebay or at Abe Books!

THE BEATLES IN NEW ZEALAND – A CONVERSATION

As stated numerous times on this blog, one of my favorite items to collect are the more obscure Beatles-related books, like this one about The Beatles in New Zealand..

This one published in 2015 features a previously unpublished interview with John Lennon done in New Zealand, in 1964. Tony Taylor conducted the interview. The Amazon description is provided below for your convenience. I bought this title a few years ago on Amazon and was thoroughly happy that I was able to add it to the collection. Though small in the number of pages, it represents yet another piece to the jigsaw puzzle that makes up part of the Beatles story!

John Lennon in Conversation: An interview with Professor Tony Taylor Paperback – 28 April 2015

by Michael O’leary (Author), Tony Taylor (Author)

Amazon UK description of the book and link to order it if you so desire:

A unique interview with John Lennon which was recorded when The Beatles were in New Zealand in 1964. It was recorded by Psychology Professor Dr Tony Taylor who was at the time doing a study into Beatlemania. It gives a remarkable insight into Lennon’s thoughts regarding fame, music and life generally at a time when the group was still new to all the world-wide adulation they were receiving. I have included an attachment of both the covers and the text for you to enjoy and to quote from if you think it will help the posting for your blog.

I think this is something of a coup for a New Zealand publisher as it must be one of the last unpublished interviews with John Lennon and it has been an honour to work with Dr Taylor on the project. You will note that my poem ‘The Flipside of the Ballad of John and Yoko’ appears at the end of the book as an antidote to the effects of fame.

The book is small in size but it is also relatively inexpensive. Being an academic, the interview is superior to most Beatles-related interviews from that time period!

THE LIFE OF BRIAN – BOOKS ABOUT BRIAN EPSTEIN

Brian Epstein has been given a primary credit for the Beatles rise to the summit of worldwide fame in addition to their phenomenal musical talent and abilities. Unfortunately, he died prematurely in 1967 at the age of 32. His death has been described as being under mysterious circumstances. He died of a combined alcohol and barbiturate overdose ruled as accidental, at the age of 32. It was known, however, that he had been severely depressed, being sad at his declining influence with the band he loved.

An interesting note about Brian is that there are some critics that claim he made a lot of financial mistakes in the early years regarding the merchandising side of Beatles memorabilia. Even John Lennon felt that they had been short-changed. However in Brian’s defense, he was also learning the business ropes along with the band he managed!!!

Ghostwritten by Derek Taylor

  • A very interesting book that deals with the private life of the Beatles manager. The authors suggest through one of Brian’s close friends that Brian was associating himself with many shady characters that were also contributing to his depressed state prior to his premature death. Copies of this book were available on Amazon, eBay and Abe Books.

I enjoyed this book by Debbie Geller, published in 2000.

Limited to 1500 signed and numbered copies. Vivek has been working on a television series based on his book for quite some time. Hope to see it become a reality soon. This is an excellent graphic novel type book which is a worthwhile addition to any Beatles collection!

This book has some built-in credibility as it was written by Beatles friend and well-known journalist, Ray Coleman. Coleman was a good writer who was not prone to tabloid journalism.

This film deals with the speculation that John and Brian had an affair in Barcelona, Spain.

An hour long interview with Joanne Petersen who worked for Brian and was at his house when his body was found.

An unpublished book that was intended for release by one of Brian’s assistants, Joanne Petersen.

It is rumored that Joanne decided not to publish the book after consulting with and abiding by the wishes of the Epstein family. Once again, the interview with Joanne above seems to contradict the sensationalistic premise that was about to be used to promote the book if it was going to be published.

This is the photo of the cancelled book as it originally appeared on Amazon.

In closing, would like to present a special book by author Terry Crain who talks about Brian Epstein’s company NEMS (North End Music Store/s) and the products officially licensed by NEMS and the Beatles for merchandising. This is truly a fabulous book intensively researched by the author. First edition was published in 2019 by Terry Crain. An updated 2nd edition has also appeared of this fine book.

BEATLES MAGAZINES THAT HAVE BECOME HARDCOVER BOOKS

A FORM OF OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE COLLECTING BEATLES MAGAZINES

Some enterprising magazine publications like UNCUT Magazine in the UK have undertaken a cross-marketing campaign in transforming a magazine title about the Beatles into a hardcover book. To those who prefer to purchase hardcover books of the Beatles, this campaign helps to satisfy that particular collecting impulse.

A friend of mine from the UK, Seamus Hayes informed me of another marketing strategy for Beatles-related magazines. This is a issue of ‘The Ultimate Music Guide of the Beatles:The Complete Story of the Beatles” issued by UNCUT magazine in the UK. It is in the magazine format with a picture on the cover taken from the Beatles Mad Day Out photography session from 1968. The magazine with the Mad Day Out cover photograph was issued in 2024 but there are earlier versions of that magazine issued with a different cover.

The magazine which is large at 172 pages with many beautiful photos is impressive. This is followed by a recent unique strategy aimed directly at Beatles collectors. Uncut magazine decided to take their Ultimate Music Guide of the Beatles and print 2 hardcover editions of most of the content that appears in the Mad Day Out cover magazine, one with a red background and one with a blue background featuring two different early Beatles photographs. My psychological justification for getting all three was now complete as being in hardback format, I was now securing two more hardcover Beatles books for my collection. I am quite aware that to many if not most people, that is not the best choice both in a practical and financial manner. Living in the States, I was cursing at the international postage costs situation but Seamus Hayes, my collecting buddy in the UK has helped me significantly in helping me deal with this situation. As fellow collectors we help each other out in our collecting obsession! Cross-referencing the book and magazine formats, especially if one format adds additional material or articles not previously available in the other formats, makes it more appealing to own both. This is especially important if you fall under the completist collector mentality!

Uncut Magazine is simultaneously published 2 hardcover editions of the magazine with a different cover from their early years. It is quite the formula as the magazine contains updated Beatle information that may be missing from the book, yet the hardcover book format offers durability and probably a much longer shelf lifespan.

I am glad I came across this with the assistance of Seamus Hayes as I love unusual editions of  Beatles print material and being in hardcover format it is like acquiring another Beatles book instead of a magazine. It is more durable, less fragile, and longer lasting. I must admit I prefer the 1968 Magazine photo much better than the earlier Beatles edition of the magazine and the covers of the hardcover books!

A CRITIQUE:

For collectors the trouble with purchasing ANY version of something called The Beatles Complete Story is that term is never truly 100% accurate as there are always new events that continue to come to the foreground that add to the story. Maybe it would be more accurate to call it “The Nearly Complete Story” or “The Far From Complete Story,” if you are a cynic. However, if you suffer from so-called malady of being a completist collector, you fall prey to getting them all ensuring you will be getting all the information you may be missing in the other editions. This is good for the magazines business but the pocketbook suffers as a result!

This is my copy of the 2024 Magazine Issue cover:

In conclusion, if you consider yourself a completist collector, what are the collectibles that you treasure the most where you may feel the impulse to acquire “all” of the information that is available to you about the subject.

For those who do not fall under that collecting category, what are the psychological restraints that you put on yourself on collecting that are outside of the financial arguments!

What items do you feel compelled to buy and WHY?
