BARRY MILES – THE SIXTIES AND THE BEATLES

Barry Miles has a long history of dealing with prominent figures of the ’60s. From his interactions with Jon (John) Dunbar, and Robert Fraser at the famous Indica Gallery where John met Yoko, to the involvement of Miles with the International Times, to his interactions with Paul McCartney and John Lennon, Miles represents much of the ’60s countercultural movement to a public that may have followed his work over the years. His backlog of books of figures from that age includes titles about Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, and Charles Bukowski.

Here is a limited signed edition of one of Barry Miles’s books. This title features his recollections of what he deems to be the most significant moments and issues of the ’60s. The slipcase that this book came in is not pictured in the photos provided below.

Many Years From Now

The universally liked book that Barry Miles authored was about his good friend, Paul McCartney, called Many Years From Now. The book was well received by the public and sold many copies. It demonstrated that Paul was indeed at the forefront of examining subjects and artists that were considered avant-garde or experimental.

In a matter of historical irony, Paul was instrumental in Yoko Ono meeting John Lennon, when she was seeking famous people to contribute one of their musical transcripts or compositions as a celebratory gift to her artist friend, John Cage. She approached Paul first, and he was initially resistant to the request, and he suggested she go ask John Lennon first. This of course helped to set the wheels in motion and time and other events (like business) resulted in the songwriting partners drifting apart and helped to contribute to the eventual dissolution of the group.

This is further evidence that it is never a single factor that results in a major cultural decision or event, but it serves as a reminder that it is indeed a tangled web we weave by the things that are said and done!!! Fans speculate about such matters all of the time. It does not change what occured but people seem to have the NEED to know! The sad thing is that fans have a tendency to want to take sides and want to blame one party over the other. What we should be sad about is how lifelong friendships can deteriorate and fragment…. for whatever the reasons turn out to be!

Many Years From Now
Many Years From Now

The very rare book that was organized in part by Barry Miles (see the reference to him on the cover) was a collection of fan photos of the Beatles taken over the years. It was only on sale for about a week when either because of administrative hassles or copyright issues, the book was quickly withdrawn. Fortunately, I was able to acquire a copy from another collector, but I truly empathize with others who are frantically searching for a copy of the book and are unable to find it. I have had numerous requests from people asking me where they can acquire a copy of this book and I feel bad that I can only give them the information to keep their eyes open on eBay for someone who may be getting rid of their own personal copy.

The Beatles – A Diary

While I was preparing this post, noted book publisher Steven Wilson reminded me of this book, which he was involved with publishing. Sometimes, keeping track of all of the Beatles-related books by a particular author and keeping them properly sorted is a difficult task. Here is a day-by-day Beatles diary authored by Miles…Thanks for the update and reminder Steven!

Finding my copy of the Beatles Diary in the collection thanks to Mr. Steven Wilson, reminded me of another Barry Miles limited edition book that I have that came in a slipcase – A special Limited Edition issued in 2012 – The Beatles Phenomenon. Published in 2012 by Omnibus and authored by Barry Miles, is described by Amazon in their promotion of the book as being; “The Beatles Phenomenon is a unique new Beatles chronicle that brings their astonishing legend to vivid life using sheet music, rare photographs and a detailed chronology of their gigs, venues, public quotes and most memorable moments.”

Of course we need to mention “The Zapple Diaries” by Barry Miles which was the first book to document the special label set up by the Beatles to deal with more non-conventional matters whether in musical expression or matters of literary concern. Zapple was a short-lived Beatles project.

Leading literary and cultural figures of the time, including Allen Ginsberg, Charles Bukowski, Richard Brautigan, William Burroughs, and Frank Zappa are discussed in the book and projects that Zapple was considering regarding these individuals are mentioned. The Zapple Diaries details and summarizes the ill-fated venture and presents a revealing account of a little-known segment of Beatles’ history.

BLACKBIRD SINGING – A BEAUTIFUL BOOK WITH A SAD STORY

The following photos of this limited edition signed Paul McCartney “Blackbird Singing” represent a sad story in my life in regards to collecting. These are saved old archived photos of the book title that I took once the book had arrived and they represent a very sad reawakening of the character of someone that I had called a friend and trusted. As it turns out my faith and trust were unfortunately misplaced.

When my mom passed away, the friend assisted in the cleanup of her home to get the 2 family house in proper shape for our family to sell the home. Well, a few items disappeared from my collection as a result and this was one of those items. When a sacred trust is broken, it cuts to the bone. Unfortunately, my collection was so massive, that I did not notice the item was missing until much later when I also discovered my former friend had passed away.

I hate to bring people down with sad tidings but one of the things we need to deal with in life is to learn how to deal with big disappointments and to find a way to cope with our losses both with people and things! You also learn that there are some people that you can trust and others you can not. Above you heard an example of mistrust of one individual but here is a better part of the story and it involves a “true” friend:

This item held a special memory for me as the person who was my best man at my wedding, who also happened to be my boss was also a big Beatles fan. I was the type of fan who always kept us up-to-date with the latest Beatles news. I had learned that Mark Lapidos of the Fest for Beatles Fans had arranged to sell copies of a signed and numbered edition of Paul’s poetry book “Blackbird Singing” and he gave the time they would go on sale in his regular newsletter, and unfortunately we would both be at work at that time of the sale. My friend said, don’t worry John, and when the time arrived for the book sale, he got through on his cell phone and ordered us two copies. I quickly compensated him for his trouble and the cost of my copy of the book. My dear friend who was kind enough to order the 2 books has since passed away from a respiratory problem.

The lesson I learned from all of this, without trying to be too preachy, is to be grateful for what you have as things are fleeting but true good friends are with you always. Hopefully, this story did not depress anyone! I hope you enjoy the photos that remain of the book…

A SONG FOR LINDA EASTMAN (BEFORE SHE WAS LINDA McCARTNEY!!!)

This is my copy of the sheet music for the song “Linda”, dedicated to Miss Linda Eastman, written by Jack Lawrence back in 1946. Jack wrote the song to deal with a debt that he owed Linda Eastman’s father, Lee Eastman. The song was a hit and turned out to be a great investment for Lee Eastman. The song was recorded by many well-known artists including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Jan and Dean. Paul’s knowledge and attraction for music publishing was certainly encouraged by the Eastman family when Paul joined the family by marrying Linda in 1969.

BEATLES UNDERCOVER: TWO RARE PAUL MCCARTNEY TRACKS

Beatles Undercover

I recently referred to the three wonderful Beatles Undercover books that author Kris Engelhardt has released over the years which can be found on Amazon.

One of the highlights for me of reading his three excellent books was being able to locate and purchase a copy of an LP that I never knew existed prior to the reading of his books. In his extensive research, Kris was able to discover an album by a group named Ivory that was recorded in Barbados and featured two rare Paul McCartney tracks entitled “Runaway” and “Freedom Land.”

These tracks were recorded in the ’80s when Paul and Linda visited Barbados on holiday. Paul recorded the demo there but apparently, an agreement was made that the group could use Paul’s songs on their LP, but not Paul’s version of the numbers. It was rumored that Paul’s demo of the songs did actually appear at an auction once. However, I have not seen that substantiated anywhere!

Rare McCartney Songs

Recording a couple of rare McCartney songs for a group looking to expose their talents can be a double-edged sword, as having those rarities can certainly garnish much interest for the band as a result of having recorded them, but it also runs the risk of removing the focus of the group as the mainstay of the LP and in being able to highlight the group’s independent musical talents. This is a fact of life whenever a former Beatle assists another artist with their recordings.

At least, Ivory has achieved a special status that one of the greatest songwriters ever, has worked with them. They have been immortalized for that achievement, both on the vinyl and now in a Beatles book!

I am personally very happy and pleased to own the three Engelhardt Beatles books and the special rare Ivory LP that his books made me aware of:

These are the 3 Kris Engelhardt Beatles titles that have enlightened me to so many Beatles-related rarities:

This is the rare LP issued only in Barbados featuring the two rare McCartney-penned tunes that Paul gave to Ivory to record. After learning about this LP from the author’s books, I conducted an extensive search for the LP and was finally able to locate a copy. It took a considerable amount of time and effort to secure a copy but the seller could sympathize and understand my fervent obsession in obtaining the disk for the collection!

A FEW APPLE RECORDS RARITIES

Apple Records Mother

FROM SOUTH AFRICA, THE PHILIPPINES, AND ISRAEL, AND ONE BONUS RARITY FROM THE NETHERLANDS

Shown below is the cover of the fabulous book that got me interested in the subject noted above. As a collector, I have become fascinated with the matter of rare Apple Records. The person that I know that fits the bill of being one of largest collector of Apple Records in the world is Nigel Pearce whose collection is both extensive and fabulous.

Nigel’s Book – Inside Number Three

There are also many knowledgeable people about the subject in Europe in countries such as Belgium where a good friend, Philippe Colinge, assisted me in finding some of the records you are about to see for me to purchase, or at least finding photographs of many of them to present to you so you are aware of their existence.

Magical Mystery Tours

There is a chapter in Tony Bramwell’s book that deals with the various licensing deals that Apple did to issue many of its records in multiple countries across the world. Three of the countries hold a particular fascination for me: The Philippines, South Africa and Israel.

For quite some time it has been reported that Tony has been working on an updated version of this book!

Magical Mystery Tours by Tony Bramwell

Mary Hopkin-Mary Had A Baby

According to some reports, the Philippines was the only country in the world that issued this Christmas holiday record on Apple Records, as Mary’s contract with Apple had just expired with Apple when it was issued there. The song appeared on different labels in all of the other worldwide locales. Mary’s husband at the time, noted record producer, Tony Visconti was involved in the production of this record. After the dissolution of their marriage, Tony was to marry May Pang who in 1973-75 had more than an 18 month relationship with John Lennon of the ex-Beatles!

First of all, I would like to take the time to acknowledge a phenomenal site based in the Netherlands that is a primary source of many of the photographs you are seeing on this blog post: This is the site and it is highly recommended. Philippe Colinge from Belgium shared this with me and I am very grateful to him. The Netherlands are the source of some of the most knowledgeable Beatles fans in the world!!!

Holiday song of: “Mary had a Baby”

The flip side: “Cherry Tree Carol”

John Lennon and “We All Shine On”

In the Philippines, the title of Instant Karma was transposed and the A-side reads as We All Shine On with Instant Karma within parentheses!

John Lennon Mother/ Isolation and The Beatles?

For some strange reason, many of the solo Beatles recordings in the Philippines began to appear with the solo artist’s name being followed by “The Beatles” on the label. This happened to John, George, and Ringo, but not Paul so I can only assume this was due to some management issue or lack thereof. What was odd about this Mother 45, it not only had the incorrect Beatles labeling but the A side of Mother was also issued as the B-side in other issues of the 45.

APPLE – “LOVE”

APPLE – “POWER TO THE PEOPLE” and the Beatles listed as the performers of Yoko Ono’s “Open Your Box”

IMAGINE”/ “OH MY LOVE”

Soon thereafter, the Beatles label was dropped from John’s 45’s.

George: “My Sweet Lord”/ “Isn’t It a Pity”

George – “What Is Life”/ “Apple Scruffs”

George – “Bangla Desh”/ “Deep Blue”

After Bangla-Desh, the Beatles attribution was dropped from the Philippine George 45’s

Ringo – “Beaucoups of Blues”/ “Coochy Coochy”

Ringo – “It Don’t Come Easy”/ “Early 1970”

A couple of Paul rarities from the Philippines. The Apple issue of Give Ireland Back to the Irish is credited as Wings featuring Paul and Linda McCartney and The “I Lie Around” Apple 45 featured I Lie Around as the A-side to Live and Let Die as the B-side!

A rare Beatles 45 from the Philippines is one that I am still seeking for in my collection: It is Two of Us with the flip side of Across the Universe from the Let It Be album! This would have made a wonderful single from the LP in my opinion. Here is a photo of the 45:

From Israel:

On Discogs, I was able to locate the rare Billy Preston EP on Apple which featured the only Apple appearance of the song “In the Midnight Hour,” by Wilson Pickett and Steve Cropper. Cropper was also to play guitar on the Phil Spector Lennon oldies sessions in California in 1973.

I want to make one exception to my three-country Apple rarity discussion. This rarity is from the Netherlands and it is the only version of James Taylor’s first Apple album to feature it on the label listed as “The First Album.”

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, APPLE RARITIES FROM SOUTH AFRICA

UYANDIZE UMABENGWANE / SIYAV UNGAZELA (Abafana Be Myunge)

DIE JARE GAAN VERBY / ROSE IS ROOI (Gene Rockwell) The AFRIKAAN VERSION OF THOSE WERE THE DAYS

Afrikaans is a West Germanic language that is spoken in South Africa according to Wikipedia!

TSI TSI NO.1″ / “MAHLOMELA (Big Voice Jack)”

The 4th known Apple South African release-no photograph is available:

DARK CITY JIVE / WHITE CITY JIVE (Izinyozi Boys)

Hope you have enjoyed this post! Special thanks go to Philippe Colinge for providing many of the photographs presented here as well as the wonderful site based in the Netherlands of: www.applerecords.nl

MCCARTNEY MAGIC IN THE SUSSEX AIR

Country Life Magazine

This story was just so good, that I had to pass it on: a piece of McCartney magic. Peter Hicks sent me this fascinating article written a while back by Angela Leighton Jones on behalf of Peter Hodgson about the Feb 4, 1954 issue of Country Life magazine which featured a picture of the Sussex Paul McCartney home long before he purchased it.

The story was captivating to me. The tale revolves around Peter Hodgson’s search for the magazine in question shown below and who sold him the copy that he was looking for.

I would like to thank Peter Hicks for bringing this magazine to my attention as I was also able to find a copy of the issue thanks to him. Found the magazine on the great book search service of Abe Books. Also a debt of gratitude owed to Peter Hodgson for his delightful story of this unique magazine cover and the obscure Lennon connection to the wonderful McCartney story.

This is Peter Hodgson’s story around a quest to find an original copy of a magazine that he saw on the fridge in the kitchen of Paul McCartney’s Hog Hill Recording Studios. It appears as sent to me by Peter Hicks:

Monday the 27th of March 1995 Peter Hodgson stood in the kitchen of Hog Hill while Paul McCartney was making him a cup of tea. Amidst the excitement of playing musical instruments with one of his heroes Paul McCartney, he noticed, stuck to the fridge with a magnet a copy of the front page of an old  Country Life magazine that featured the actual Windmill and house.

Peter was intrigued but didn’t think to take a closer look to see the date of the magazine, although it was a really old edition.

“However, since that date twenty-eight years ago, all Peter had managed to find was a bad-quality scanned copy of the front cover of the said magazine which he retrieved about four years ago.

That was until last week when he found on eBay his very own original copy of that edition of Country Life magazine edition, February 4th, 1954.

“Peter was keen to hear if the seller – a Mr. William Benzie – knew the significance of the front cover of the magazine and the fact the windmill now belonged to Paul McCartney.

Peter was surprised when Mr. Benzie said he was unaware. Peter then handed Mr. Benzie the money for the old magazine and was really pleased with himself. Then just as Pete thought the day couldn’t get any better, Mr Benzie disclosed the fact that it was his father who had taught John Winston Lennon Geography at Quarry Bank School. His father was Gordon Jeavons Benzie a Geography teacher at Quarry Bank School.

I guess you couldn’t write it!

WASN’T THAT AN AMAZING STORY BY MR. PETER HODGSON?? And a thank you again to Angela Leighton Jones for putting the article together.

A PHOTO OF THE MAGAZINE IN QUESTION:

Country Life Magazine
Country Life Magazine

A magazine from 1954 belonging to one of John Lennon’s teachers in the 1950s featuring a picture of Hog Hill Mill which thirty years later would become the recording studio for John’s bandmate Paul. Johns’ teacher Gordon Benzie would have acquired the magazine sixty-nine years ago not knowing that he too would play a small part in the journey.

The magazine is now on display at the Liverpool Beatles Museum in Mathew Street, Liverpool.
