PAUL McCARTNEY’S PRESS TO PLAY-AUTHOR’S SIGNED EDITION

I love hearing and learning virtually out-of-the-blue about special signed and numbered limited editions of books that are written by special authors like the prolific and talented, Luca Perasi. Special Beatle fan and chief editor of the fantastic Paul McCartney magazine entitled Maccazine, Edward Eikelenboom, worked out an arrangement and collaborated with Luca Perasi in order to issue a special 30 copy only signed and numbered edition of his latest book about the various recorded works of the legendary Paul McCartney. Being a collector sometimes means being at the right place at the right time. For example, when I learned of this special edition by email, I quickly requested to purchase the last signed and numbered copy for my collection. With special limited edition signed and numbered books you often need to act very quickly to ensure getting a copy. I always try to obtain the last numbered copy as it is far more difficult to acquire copy #1 of any limited edition book. I am not always successful in attempts to get the last numbered copy, but in this circumstance I was fortunate to be able to acquire copy #30. With a small limited edition amount of copies, you also need to be very lucky or happen to be around when the books become available from the source that you acquire the book from. Putting the signed and numbered aspects of the book aside, Luca Perasi is an author whose work I admire and his research skills are excellent and without parallel, it is the best of both worlds.

AMAZON’s Description of the book:

As divisive an album it might be within McCartney’s artistic journey, Press to Play touches the hearts of many fans — including a new, younger generation that was then shaping — and offers many points of interest for music historians and musicians. Released in the summer of 1986, the album was an interesting – although commercially unsuccessful – attempt to update McCartney’s vocabulary, with which he firmly planted both feet in the realm of the Eighties.
With its wide range of sonic influences, from synth-pop and video game music to simple rock ‘n’ roll; its imagery and surrealism; its themes of romance and sexual fervour; and its mix of mellow and harder tracks, Press to Play is an album split in two. There is a certain penchant for glossy perfection, but also a sound research and experimentation that never becomes obvious.

Enriched by coloured images, the volume Press to Play. That Unmistakable 80s Sound tells the story of one of McCartney’s most obscure records and misunderstood periods (1985–86). In its detailed analysis of the album’s sonic wonders, based on contemporary sources and in-depth interviews by the author with key figures such as Hugh Padgham, Jerry Marotta and Carlos Alomar, the book guides readers through the many fascinating aspects of the record (the new Hog Hill Mill Studio, the recording equipment and tricks, the instrumentation, the effects used, the coexistence between analogue and digital). The abundance of instrumentation – which combines modern sounds from the era (DX7 synthesisers, sequencers, emulator, LinnDrum) and vintage pieces such as Hammond organ, Moog, Fender Rhodes – makes it one of the most multilayered albums of Paul McCartney’s career.
The volume covers the supposed “production misunderstanding” with Eric Stewart, the songwriting partnership with the ex-10CC leader, the timeline of the sessions, the stories behind the songs (including B-sides, unreleased material and the single “Spies Like Us”), their harmonic and rhythmic inventions, and lyrical analysis. The many factors that undermined McCartney’s confidence at the time are also explored, including the unfortunate Live Aid performance and Michael Jackson’s acquisition of The Beatles’ song catalogue, leading to discovering what went wrong and why and there’s also a chapter devoted to the insecurity showed during the promotion of the album, offering a new psychological and human insight into Paul. Has Press to Play stood the test of time? An unprecedented and incredibly rich historical look at one of Paul McCartney’s most forgotten albums.

Copy #30 of the signed Press to Play, Luca Perasi book

Luca presents a strong and convincing case in his book about the merits of this McCartney release. I must admit though, that I was never a big fan of Press to Play prior to reading his piece and Luca has successfully made me return to the release and appreciate it far more than I originally did when it became a part of our McCartney archives! Well done, Luca!

A Little Fun to end the post

Though McCartney may appear to have a clear Stranglehold on the gift of melody. He has the good instincts to know that Good Times Coming is a distinct possibility for humankind, but only if we just take the time to Feel the Sun and to simply Touch your Pretty Little Head when contemplating the situation. He knows the Footprints in the snow give him the early warning signs and permission to say Move Over Busker to his competition. That may make them Angry but it may Press them into creative action knowing that Only Love Remains when you play the right cards and improve your musical skills. However Absurd this may sound to you, if you Talk More Talk and say all the right things you will realize I was just having a little fun with discussing Luca’s new book and Paul’s song titles from the Press to Play LP.

The John Lennon Instant Karma Mystery Man! We All Fall On (B.P., that is)

At the risk of being seen as ignorant, I must admit that the first time that I saw John Lennon’s appearance of Instant Karma on the Top of the Pops program, I did not recognize one of the band members. It was only much later that I was to learn of the considerable talents and achievements of the man named B.P. Fallon who was to appear in the video.

Bernard Patrick Fallon was born August 24, 1946, later to become more commonly known as B.P. Fallon. Part of his significant list of achievements was as an Irish DJ, a journalist, an author of several books, an actor, a photographer and a musician.

His introduction to a Beatle came with John Lennon granting him a 3-part interview for Melody Maker back in 1969 during the Amsterdam Bed-In. His Beatles association was deepened when he later worked at Apple for Derek Taylor. The Melody Maker interview was in 3 parts. Two of the three issues are shown here as they are a part of my personal collection, thanks to eBay! Special thanks are also extended to Chip Madinger for providing the particulars of the info regarding the three issues of MM featuring the B.P. Fallon interview with John and Yoko from 1969!

Melody Maker April 19th 1969:

You can see the MM exclusive message concerning the interview on the right hand side of this page crediting B.P. Fallon for the 3-part interview:

Melody Maker November April 26th 1969:

B.P.’s MM exclusive is credited to him in Part 3 of the interview:

There were also ‘rumors’ circulating that B.P. happened to be a marijuana tester for one of the Beatles, though not for John as many might have expected! You will hear that story by Mr. Fallon himself on one of the links provided elsewhere on this post.

In 1970, while John Lennon was preparing a live vocal appearance of his song, Instant Karma, on the UK TV program, Top pf the Pops, John asked B.P., who was backstage, to appear in the video with him. It fit in perfectly with John and Yoko’s idea that the Plastic Ono Band was a conceptual band and that anyone can be a member of the band. (You are the Plastic Ono Band!)

To further illustrate J and Y’s concept of the POB:

The front cover of my personal copy of the July 5, 1969 issue of NME which featured John’s design of Yoko’s concept of flexibility in the perception of the make-up of their conceptual band. The plastic flexible containers with the tape machine and microphones and a phone directory indicating that virtually anyone could be a member of the band.

In any case, B.P was in two versions of the performance of Instant Karma. One version in which he appears in a hat borrowed from an audience member where he holds a bass guitar during the performance, while Mal Evans plays a tambourine and Klaus Voormann is also on bass. In the other video, B.P. plays the tambourine apparently the one used originally by Mal in the other video.

A good summary of some of the basic biographical information about Mr. Fallon is provided at this Wikipedia site where you can also learn about his duties as a publicist for Thin Lizzy and T. Rex. B.P also represented Ian Drury. His musical output is also discussed in the piece.

BP Fallon – Wikipedia

B.P. admired and respected the late Sinéad O’Connor and he took many fabulous photographs of her.

One common theme running throughout B.P.’s career are his strong Irish roots which he is obviously very proud of. It is a theme repeated in so many sources of information about the man!

There is another Beatles-related connection to B.P as he was one of the writers of a tribute song to the late Wings guitarist, Henry McCullough. His song to Henry details the admiration he had for the musician and many of the prominent musicians that Henry worked with.

It is truly amazing to realize that B.P. has had such a very long and tremendous 60+ productive years in the music industry. We thank him for his wonderful contributions!

In this version of the Top pf the Pops program BP Fallon has a bass guitar though the only thing that is live is Lennon’s vocal of the song. John had asked B.P. backstage to help him with the video by pretending to play bass. He told B.P. that anyone can be a member of the POB. (A conceptual band)! Klaus Voormann is also seen playing bass in the video. In one version of the video we also see the late Mal Evans (the Gentle Giant) and friend of the Beatles playing tambourine

“So it’s John Lennon’s 75th Birthday, God bless him. I’m very sad he’s not here and I’m very glad that he was. Glad? John Lennon changed my life, he changed everything for so many people, he and The Beatles and beyond. The world will never be the same, thanks to John and his chums.

“And yet… Give Peace A Chance. Yes please. We need it now as much as ever – wars all over our battered yet still blessed planet, lunatics rushing around with guns, this uncertain globe melting from greed and stupidity.

“Did John Lennon save the world? No. But he gave it a try in his naive and magical way, Dr Winson O’Boogie from Liverpool, England, with his guitar and his music and his aspirational and inspirational thoughts.

“Was he perfect? No. Strangely strange but oddly normal, a fallible human being like all of us, not some deity but an enormously special and gifted rock’n’roller who reached out. John, thank you. We love you. Rest in peace”

It is certainly obvious to me how much B.P. loves and admires his Irish roots and appropriately enough. I will close this post with a B.P. Fallon book which I recently acquired about B.P. travelling with and photographing the touring band, U2!!!

ANOTHER BEATLES-RELATED HODGEPODGE POST

Beatles Hodgepodge posts on this blog are designed to present unusual (or not as common print-related items) that have a Beatles connection that potentially many fans, especially those of a more casual nature, may have not been exposed to before!

First of all I would like to acknowledge my good friend across the pond, Seamus Hayes. On numerous occasions he has helped me acquire items from eBay in the UK that eBay UK sellers refuse to sell to prospective buyers in the US due to high postage costs. I have heard many similar feelings from individuals in the UK who feel the same way about buying items in the US that they may want for their collections and some US sellers refuse to ship there. I suggest that both countries revise their eBay policies to give the prospective buyer the choice as to whether they are willing to pay the significantly higher cost of shipping the item internationally. That would at least allow the buyer to make the decision if they then wish to purchase the item.

Seamus Hayes acquired this item for me because he was aware that I love special one-off type of magazines, especially from 1964, that have a special slant concerning the Beatles conquering of the world in 1964. The date of the magazine is special because it was in February of 1964 that the Beatles arrived in America and appeared on the Ed Sullivan show. The special and appealing nature regarding the Psychology issue shown below is that it is not designed or intended as a teen periodical. It is more academic-centered and the primary audience is adults which is highly unusual for an early 1964 magazine dealing with the Beatles. That oddity alone made me want to acquire the magazine for the collection! If America had gotten the opportunity to view this UK magazine prior to the Beatles arrival, perhaps we would have been better prepared for what was about to invade and conquer our shores!

I love print items that have a Beatles connection to them and that were not manufactured or distributed on a mass scale. I bought a Magic Christian promo booklet on eBay promoting the Ringo Starr/Peter Sellers film. The program gave a synopsis of the plot of the movie and some details of Paul McCartney’s musical contribution to the film with the song he wrote for Badfinger entitled, Come and Get It!

Love these one-off Beatles specialty magazines. This one was recently put together and published by TV Guide in 2025 and features Beatle-related puzzles, trivia questions, word searches, crosswords and scrambled words, just to name a few categories of pure fun. I picked up this copy of the magazine at a local Barnes and Noble. I personally enjoy the challenge of seeing if the various games that appear in the magazine can stump me!

The cover of the TV Guide sponsored Beatles magazine:

Loved the cover photo of this 2005 Mexican magazine called Marvin and I bought it for the collection primarily due to the cover on eBay! Usually my decision to purchase a foreign language Beatles-related magazine or book is a result of the photography contained in the title!

Acquiring the signed item below this paragraph recently has given me an idea about expanding my side of the Beatles print blog to include items from the 100 or so Beatles scrapbooks that I maintained over the years until the digital age kicked in. This particular item is a signed item by all three members of Paddy Klaus and Gibson. (Paddy (Patrick) Chambers, Klaus Voormann and Gibson Kemp). It is interesting to note the brief mention at the bottom of the signed photo that the Beatles recommended that Brian Epstein manage the trio. Two of the members were engaged to Astrid, first Kalus Voormann and when that relationship ended, Gibson Kemp. Gibson Kemp actually married Astrid in 1967.

Purchased this photo on eBay of the day that Astrid married drummer Gibson Kemp in 1967. Here is the photo as it appears on an internet site:

This EP was released many years later and was Paddy Chambers Klaus Voormann, Gibson Kemp. Paddy, Klaus and Gibson’s collection of 45s. I bought a copy of this collection from the great book publisher Apcor who is responsible for the fantastic “A is for Apple” book series. The cover design was by Klaus Voormann who had used a similar design for a recording by another group called The Eyes.

Very rarely do I acquire re-print of posters but this one simply appealed too much to me on many levels. This 1965 poster mentions a two-date Edinburgh performance organized by Brian Epstein . The Beatles collections on this poster are enormous. Paul many years later was to write a song for the Everly Brothers called On the Wings of a Nightingale. The Everlys harmonies inspired the Beatles vocal singing styles. Cilla Black was a Cavern cloakroom attendant who became a popular hit singer managed by Epstein. Lionel Blair, dance choreographer who appeared in A Hard Day’s Night. Billy J. Kramer covered many Beatles songs and he had a few specific songs written for him by the Beatles. Finally we have Paddy, Klaus and Gibson who was recommended to Epsten by the Beatles. Paddy had many Liverpool band connections including The Big Three. Klaus Voormann was a friend of the Beatles since the early 60s and has been a lifelong friend since. He designed their Revolver album cover and backed all of the solo Beatles on bass during their solo careers. He was in love with Astrid K. but later Astrid was to fall in love with Beatles friend and band member Stu Sutcliffe who died unexpectedly in 1962. Drummer Gibson Kemp in 1967 married Astrid and that marriage was not to last that long.

Just the basic summary and description from above demonstrates how complicated life can really be as relationships can change, evolve, deepen, dissolve and sometimes even disappear!

Hope you enjoyed the latest Hodgepodge Beatles post! If you did enjoy the post, what item did you have the most interest in viewing or learning about?

MACH SCHAU-THE BEATLES IN HAMBURG- BY THORSTEN KNUBLAUCH “THE BEST BOOK ABOUT THE BEATLES IN GERMANY”

If you were to ask me as a collector of Beatles books and print material, which Beatles title that I own a copy of, represents the champion book as it relates to the story and background of the Beatles history and development of their musical talents in Germany, then this title written by Thorsten Knublauch would get my 5-star vote!!!

The author prides himself in getting the most accurate information possible for his work and this 2021 book published by Netherlands publisher, Apcor Publications, is no exception. A great researcher similar to Mark Lewisohn in that he checks many sources before he commits to publishing something.

His Mach Schau book was initially published in a 500 copy limited edition and quickly sold-out like many Apcor limited editions frequently do. There was also a 2nd run of 400 copies of the book. Nowadays, copies of the book are fetching in excess of $2,000 on eBay! An obvious complement to both the quality of the book and the author!!! According to Thorsten the book will never appear in a subsequent reprinting.

I have been spending time of late re-reading this book and I recently came across a detail from Thorsten that I had forgotten about concerning the Beatles famous recording of Summertime featuring John, Paul, George, Ringo and Lu Walters. Allan Williams many years later had contacted Ringo Starr telling him about the early 60s Akustik recording and said that if Ringo agreed to a Liverpool performance that Williams was organizing that he would turn over the record to Ringo as part of an agreement. At first Ringo seemed to scoff at the suggestion. The Akustik demo unfortunately was not played at Apple in 1969 – if it was it would have been on the Nagra tapes. Williams had it kept in his hotel. In 1971 it was played to Ringo at the Apple office and Williams later lost it. That is the biggest pity according to Thorsten. Well many of us have heard the rest of the story though I had forgotten the part where Thorsten describing Ringo eventually reaching out to Allan to actually agree to the performance/record exchange only to discover that Allan had lost his copy of the recording. Ringo refused to accept Allan’s explanation that he had lost it. One thing we do know based on Thorsten’s book is that Ringo was actually able to hear the recording before it was probably lost to the world forever! Thorsten also offers details how Ringo appeared alongside Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers in a mimed drum performance of Pete Best’s version of My Bonnie on the German TV program Die Aktuelle Schaubude (The Current Showcase) which occurred in mid Jan. 1962. No footage of the performance survives! (See page 448 of the Mach Schau book)

It makes you wonder what may have happened if Ringo had immediately agreed to Allan William’s initial proposaI.

Have asked Thorsten if he believes a copy of the famed recording still may exist and will ever turn up, and his prognosis was not a good one!

Through the recommendation of Thorsten Knublauch I was able to obtain one copy of a limited edition poster that was issued in honor of the Kaiserkeller club where the Beatles played some Hamburg gigs. The poster was signed by Kaiserkeller owner, Bruno Koschmider aka Bruno Kochschmider, Tony Sheridan who the Beatles backed and with whom they recorded the “My Bonnie” single with, Pete Best, the drummer who was soon to be replaced by Ringo Starr, and E. Ross who was the designer of the poster. According to Thorsten there may be less than 100 of these signed posters in circulation. I am so happy I followed his recommendation to acquire one of these great posters, I would most certainly have regretted not adding one to the collection!

One of my favorite signed posters in my collection is a signed photo of John Lennon and the early Beatles in the Top Ten Club in Germany taken by noted German photographer, Peter Brüchmann. I bought this signed photo on eBay several years ago!

Acquired this signed photo from Beatles collector and author, Kris Engelhardt. Roy Young backed the Beatles on piano at the Star Club in Hamburg on a few occassions in the very early 60s

Saw the link to this rare photo for sale at Getty Images of Roy Young at the Star Club backing the Beatles on piano:

Thorsten Knublauch was so kind in seeking out this Der Spiegel magazine for me from Germany with a cover designed by Klaus Voormann. Thorsten went the extra-mile for me as he asked Klaus to personalize the magazine.

Shows you the kind of man that Thorsten is. I do not forget acts of kindness like this!

In summary, the Beatles story in Germany and Hamburg is a fascinating tale because it might have been the true beginnings of their eventual rise to the peak of the mountaintop.

Thorsten Knublauch tells that story like no other…

Thorsten has provided a special gift and surprise for us all-here is the kind and generous message he recently sent to me:

A special Thorsten Knublauch surprise for viewers of this blog:

SPECULATION ABOUT THE SOLO BEATLES OUTPUT

There are many Beatle-related books that may have escaped our attention over the years for one reason or another. Normally I don’t like “speculative books” that deal with events that might have been. In this case, I will make an exception. Released in 2020, it is the author’s speculation as to what “may have been” credible Beatle LP’s culled from their solo output. If specific solo tracks were placed in specific running order by George Martin, could they have passed the test of being considered as being the quality and high standards of being “new Beatles albums” in the 10 to twelve year period following their breakup?

Books like this this can either enrage fans or engage them as how often when you may have heard a certain solo track over the years, you may have mentioned to yourself- “that would have made a great Beatles track” or I wish “Paul was singing harmony on that track” as it would have made a world of difference.”

Some of the author’s analysis I can fully agree with and understand, but some tracks I could never see as being done on a distinct new group LP. However, I did find the analysis and speculation to be both entertaining and gripping at times.

Some see any type of historical speculation as fruitless as “things” did not simply happen that way. However when we watch a fictional movie with a good story, can we not be both pleased and entertained?

The author should be given credit for making the attempt as most hardcore Beatles fans would could reject this concept out of hand!

The facet of this book that I most enjoyed was the analysis of why certain solo tracks would have mixed well with other solo attempts to make a cogent and acceptable Beatles LP. For people well-schooled in production values, specifically, that would have been a big hurdle in putting these imaginary Beatles albums together based on their solo track output!

Author Rick Prescott’s book was a much larger book than I anticipated as it is more than 500 pages of his analysis. The odd thing is we all would probably find “different” reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with the author’s choices throughout the book. That is the most compelling reason for me to find this book a welcome enterprise and exercise!

What do you think? Would it have been possible to make several beautiful Beatles albums with the output they produced in their early solo years nearly a decade after their split? If so, would love to hear some of your suggestions of the collection of tracks that would have made true quality albums of Beatles stature!!! Take some time with this, as I would love to read your comments!

PAUL McCARTNEY -THE NEW WORLD TOUR 1993 A NEW BOOK BY ADRIAN ALLAN-AUGUST 2025

Adrian Allan. Meadow Music Publishing

(author of Paul McCartney After the Beatles: A Musical Appreciation Series)

Notification of the availability of the title should appear or is expected sometime in late August 2025 at the following websites:
Meadow Music Publishing Link

A listing of other Adrian Allan books including several more McCartney books concerning his various tours and live appearances over the years:

Adrian Allan – Books and Publications Spotlight | Lulu

Adrian Allan on Amazon books

The author’s own description of his latest work about Paul McCartney:

“This book is a comprehensive assessment of McCartney’s 1993 New World Tour.

It was intended to be a glorious follow-up to the highly successful World Tour of 1989-90. However, there were some issues – the critics did not warm to the album Off the Ground. The tour ran into financial difficulties in the USA, which led to the resignation of McCartney’s manager, Richard Ogden. However, the tour was still a success for the fans – as proven by the many fan accounts within the book. This would be the last time that McCartney would work with this line-up, apart from Wix – his trusted keyboard player and musical director. McCartney then spent 1994 working on the Beatles Anthology project, putting touring behind him until after the turn of the millennium.”

Back cover of the book:

Adrian has graciously allowed us to post a few sample pages from his new book:

Adrian has written many wonderful books concerning Paul McCartney’s various live concert appearances and tours. His great knowledge of music, embellished with his teaching experience and expertise is clear and evident in all of his titles that I have read. If you are interested, please check out the links provided at the beginning of this post.

Will end this post with a question for the people who have experienced multi-McCartney live shows over the years. What was your personal favorite of the times you may have seen Paul perform live? Why was it your favorite show? My favorite show was a McCartney show in Boston where I was fortunate to be able to secure a front row seat. I was sitting two seats away from Heather Mills at the time.
