There was a time when both Look and Life magazine were the large format magazines that allowed photography and photo-journalism to take hold in the magazine marketplace. However, the digital age has greatly reduced this type of magazine.
The Beatles (or a Beatle) or a mention of the group on the cover of Look or Life Magazine – not in chronological order.
There are many issues of Life and Look that have articles on the Beatles in addition to those mentioned here. This post only deals with those issues where a photo appears or a mention of a group member appears on the cover. If you are aware of a Life/Look magazine that may have been missed in this series whereby the Beatles or a Beatle appears on the cover or where a Beatles name appears on the cover, please bring the issue to the attention of administrator David Bedford and he will add it to the post! Thank you!
LOOK MAGAZINE MARCH 18, 1969-written by Yoko’s former classmate at Sarah Lawrence, Betty Rollin. John gave some sarcastic remarks about the author of this piece intended to introduce the new couple to the world. The sarcastic remarks appeared on John and Yoko’s first appearance on the Dick Cavett show. John was disappointed in Betty because he expected a more positive portrayal of Yoko by her former college associate.

LIFE MAGAZINE July 24, 1967
Only appeared as the cover in Australia, New Zealand and as this magazine indicates, Asia. One has to wonder why this cover did not appear in the USA or the UK. Do you have any foreign language books in your Beatles book collections? If so what are the titles? Are different photographs the main draw for you when you purchase a foreign language book or is it simply due to you being able to speak several languages?
Book #2 is in the English language and is more than 600 pages long:BOOTLEG– THE BEATLES
Here is the 2nd new book from Italy, a 630 page book from Fulvio Fiore and Alex Franchi dealing with a pictorial history of bootleg recordings. Please be advised that this site does not endorse or support bootleg recordings but studying their history is truly a fascinating subject. Countries like the Netherlands and Italy have copyright laws that are far more liberal than countries like the US and the UK. Alex Franchi, one of the authors of this new book, has sent us a few sample pages from his pictorial history book dealing with underground recordings: Please note that the sample pages shown below deal mainly with the Beatles, but the book deals with virtually all major artists from that time period. This is not a Beatles book per se’.
BOOK # 2

OTHER GREAT BEATLES BOOKS AT THE BEATLES BOOKSTORE
As we celebrate the Ed Sullivan show appearance by The Beatles, I dig into my collection for some great pieces from my collection.
I obtained this signed McCartney band member photo on eBay a few years ago for 2 major reasons. This is my favorite configuration of a group of musicians that has backed Paul since the Beatles disbanded. Secondly, it was for the historical significance of this band playing a concert above The Ed Sullivan Theater marquee in New York, the site which propelled the Beatles to a worldwide audience, firmly establishing and entrenching their journey into the history books….

Band member signatures appearing on this photo taken in 2009:

Brian Ray – also on lead guitar, sometimes rhythm or bass guitar when Paul is playing lead, and backing vocals
Abe Laboriel – on drums, also on backing vocals

JOHN LENNON – GERMAN MAGAZINE
Love collecting foreign magazines whereby the foreign country, in this case Germany which I have a rudimentary knowledge of the language, put a solo Beatle on the cover that did not appear in the States. The article about John appearing in this German Rolling Stone translates into: John Lennon: Between Man and Myth!
This book may be controversial to some but it was a fascinating read. This is the author, Robert Rosen, who was going to collaborate with John Lennon’s PA, Fred Seaman, on a book dealing with John Lennon’s diaries, which were taken by the PA from the Lennon’s apartment without the Estate’s permission. Numerous lawsuits were brought by the Estate against the PA for the accused larceny. This book by the author who was going to collaborate with the PA was allowed to be published and it presents Mr. Rosen’s story as to how he saw the actual events unfold. In numerous Facebook communication exchanges with Mr. Rosen, I expressed a hope to be able to read the diaries one day but ONLY with the condition that it had the permission and the approval of the Lennon Estate, as these were private sentiments expresed by John when he was alive. He understood my sentiments and that explains his comments when he signed a copy of the book for me. Book published in 2000 by Soft Skull Press, Inc.

DECONSTRUCTING THE BEATLES
When Scott Freiman, the noted lecturer, academician, and creator of the stellar Deconstructing the Beatles series of DVDs released the Abbey Road DVD issue, it held a special significance for me. It was an excellent 2 dvd presentation of the history of the creation of The Beatles Abbey Road LP with all of the hidden treats contained between the record grooves. Scott dealt with such issues as the extent of the Beethoven influence on the creation of the Beatles song entitled “Because” on the LP’s B-side.
He deals with the exploding growth of the musical maturity and creativity of George Harrison and deals extensively with Paul’s great contributions to the fantastic Side 2 medley which was being strongly encouraged by Beatles producer, George Martin. Scott Freiman’s marketing people promoted a special release for the unique superfan 2 disk edition of Abbey Road Deconstructed. I have since forgotten the number of copies that were actually issued, but it was a much higher cost than the standard edition to the purchaser. One could get their name included on the cover of the dvd and it would also appear on a poster celebrating the special edition. In addition, they were also to issue a very large beautiful photo reproduction of the Abbey Road cover which would certainly be an ideal feature in anyone’s music room! In the future I hope to do a blog post on all of Scott Freiman’s Beatles-related DVDs.

A special book and the kind that I personally treasure that deal with specific UK Beatles gigs that are not so well-known outside the UK. This book written by Pete Chambers is one of those titles. It is a small book published in 2006 by Tencton Planet. This book deals with the Beales encounters with and at Coventry during their careers!
You can find this title occasionally featured on eBay and at many book search services such as Abe Books.

DAVID SPINDEL
Though this is by no means a Beatles book, I am spotlighting it here because it is by a dear friend and one of the last photographers ever to take pictures of John Lennon, David Spindel. David has photographed many celebrities in his lifetime and many of the stories that accompany these interactions are included in this special book. There are a few Lennon photos in this book as well. Here is a link where you can explore David’s work.David M Spindel

JUNE HARRIS INTERVIEWS THE BEATLES
An excellent early interview with the Beatles from September 12, 1964, Music Business Magazine conducted by June Harris:
June Harris interviews The Beatles
This magazine from January of 2000, was for some unknown reason, very expensive and difficult to obtain. I don’t even recall a Lennon feature within the magazine if memory serves me correctly. I just liked the photo and it represented an early photo of the growing relationship of John and Yoko.
JULIAN LENNON – PHOTOGRAPH
I may have posted this before but I love this signed Julian Lennon Photograph Smile poster not only for the great shot of Julian as a youth but I loved the music on this album. To me it is a disgusting shame that the music industry has treated this guy in such a terrible way. He has produced some masterful LP’s with disappointing sales figures. For example Julian has mentioned in a couple of podcasts about his new Life’s Fragile Moments photogrpahy book that when he released his latest “Jude” LP he rehearsed a band in or around LA to perhaps do some television appearances to promote the LP, and none of those prospective programs offered him the chance to appear on the shows. That is thoroughly disgusting and undeserved in my opinion. He deserves a lot better as I believe his talents in both music and photography are exemplary…

TIME GOES BY SO QUICKLY:
PIcked up this Julian cover story in the summer of 2024. It is hard to believe that a Beatle offspring will be celebrating his 62nd birthday in April of 2025.

THE BEATLES AND CHRISTMAS
One of my favorite all-time Beatles Christmas items. This book created by well-known Beatles author, Scott Belmer and his co-writing cohort, Garry Marsh, was introduced/released in 2022 and was published by Belmo Publishing and Number 9 Books in the UK. Illustrator- Bill Stout. It is a thorough treatise of the Beatles strong associations with the Christmas season and the special releases they were involved with over the years to celebrate the holiday!

The Beatles and Christmas
Scott accepted a submission I had sent in for the book about a fan Beatles/Christmas recollections (me) and I was quite frustrated with the piece after it went to publication as I discovered a glaring error that I made as it relates to when Ringo’s Christmas album was released. I said 2017, which was the cd, but the vinyl release was actually in 1999.. Oh the shame….Anyhow here was my submission!

RINGO STARR – I WANNA BE SANTA CLAUS
In the holiday frame of mind thought I would share with you this framed poster of the Ringo Christmas album, “I Wanna Be Santa Claus.” I loved this album and was greatly disappointed hearing that it did not sell as well as expectedwhen it was released.Having this promo poster is special to me because the album deserved a far better sales figure than it secured.

JOHN LENNON AND THE SUPERNATURAL?
A magazine combining science fiction and the supernatural. Bought it primarily because it was so unusual and also because I personally believe that John Lennon did indeed feel internally that his life was going to end prematurely and soon according to people like Jack Douglas who sensed a spirit of uneasiness with John at the end.
This from the April 1981 issue of Beyond Reality Magazineappearing about 5 months following his murder.
JOHN LENNON AND THE SUPERNATURAL?
INTERVIEW WITH PAUL MCCARTNEY
An issue of the UK Observer that I always see commanding high prices on eBay. I purchased a copy of this November 26, 1967 issue of the magazine and I discovered why it was in such a high demand. The interview with Paul contained in the magazine was conducted by Alan Aldridge, the author and artist who did the series of books entitled “The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics.” He designed the cover of the magazine and a few other illustrations within. Glad I got one!

JOHN AND PAUL AND APPLE
An issue of the August 1968 Teen Screen Magazine which features several Beatles-related articles including one about the journey that John and Paul made to NY in 68 to promote Apple. I keep lobbying and challenging some ambitious author as it being an interesting book idea to explore the activities of John and Paul during their sojourn to NY to discuss their new company. There are tons of available photographs from that trip and numerous activities to report on. I sincerely hope someone picks up that challenge one day. I would attempt it except I am quite frankly too old to adequately pursue the idea…
JOHN AND PAUL AND APPLE
JOHN LENNON AND ME
The program and dialog to a 1996 play by author Cherie Bennett that deals with a Beatles fan afflicted with a life threatening disease (cystic fibrosis) and her ability to cope with the curveballs that life sometines throws at us. I know I am in the minority but I love books like this that explore the effects the Beatles had or have on our respective lives. To me this type of book solidifies their cultural impact on the world.

BERNIE TAUPIN
Some of you may be asking why a Bernie Taupin book about his lyrics appears in a Beatles-related print blog. Well, it has to do with John Lennon’s friendship with both Elton John and Bernie Taupin. We all know about the famous 1974 Thanksgiving concert of Elton’s where John performed three songs and played tambourine in the encore, but not as much is known about John’s contribution to Bernie’s book of his illustrated lyrics. many artists like Alan Aldridge were asked to contribute something to illustrate the fine lyrics of Taupin. John Lennon volunteered to contribute one of his many collages that he had done over the years to illustrate the song “Bennie and the Jets.” The collage appears in this book but I won’t surprise you by including it here, you will need to discover the collage on your own. The book is available on Amazon, Ebay and many other book sources. This book was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1976

EXPLORE THE BEATLES BOOKSTORE FOR GREAT BOOKS ABOUT THE BEATLES
Without question, this is the best Beatles discography in the world that I have encountered and only 500 copies of this 2009 book are in existence. This book sold out so fast that it was one of the rare Beatles-related book titles that I missed out on its initial sales pitch. I was only to discover the book much later and spent over a year trying to find a copy reasonably priced which I eventually did.
That really is a shame as more people should be privy to the wonderful worldwide research that the author Joachim Noske undertook to create this volume of nearly 800 pages. Housed in a slipcase that has the same cover as the book, with full-color photographs provided throughout this masterwork. It must have been incredibly expensive for Mr. Noske to produce this title and why he may be reticent to produce an updated version of the book.
As a Beatles book collector who also terms himself as a completist, discographies pose one major problem to me personally. First of all, I only collect print media and not digital copies of a book, so electronic updates of new material do not interest me. Secondly, the problem with discographies, even the BEST ONES, is that they become immediately out-of-date when a new release by the artist is issued. So you may be holding a valuable reference work in your hand with the excellent discography that you have, but in a few years, if the record company keeps mining their archives with additional releases, your book becomes more and more incomplete.
However, the slight criticism I expressed above does not discount or diminish the special beauty of this wonderful book and the incredible amount of time it must have taken Mr. Noske to produce it. Two kind associates who I met on Facebook that live in Israel, brought the knowledge of this book to my attention and I will always be grateful to them for doing so!

Hope you enjoyed this piece about the world’s best Beatles Discography. One of the questions as a result of this book is: In the future when the surviving Beatles are no longer here and maybe 20 or so years after they have passed, will someone attempt to produce a complete and thorough worldwide Beatles discography?
I know the answer to my second question to that is: If they do, I am certain it will only be a digital-only copy…..LOL!!!
The Applejacks were an English beat group from the 1960s. They had a strange classification as a “Brumbeat” group which translates, according to Wikipedia, as being from the West Midlands -Birmingham area of the UK. They also had the distinction of being the first band from that area to have a top ten UK single in the UK singles charts. Another unusual feature for the band (at that time in history) was having a female bass player.
The Applejacks met the Beatles during rehearsals for a television appearance where Lennon and McCartney provided the group with a song which was to be their second single entitled “Like Dreamers Do.”
“Tell Me When”, their first single, was released in February 1964 (something else very important also happened that month in the US as well) and “Tell Me When” got to the No. 7 position on the UK singles chart.
“Like Dreamers Do” only reached #20 on the UK singles charts, however. Other than the Decca audition Beatles version of the song, the Beatles were never were to officially record a studio version of the song for their own EMI/Capitol label.

Original Applejacks band member signatures that I recently acquired on eBay:
Al Jackson-lead vocals(left the band in 1966)
Martin Baggott-lead guitar
Don Gould-piano
Phil Cash-rhythm guitar
Gerry Freeman-drums–(left 1967)
Megan Davies-bass guitar
It must be noted that this was not the only band configuration of the group.
2 New members were to join the band when two of the original members, Al Jackson and Gerry Freeman, left the group. The band finally went their separate ways in 1967.
Paul Willetts-drums (joined 1967)
John Washington –lead vocal (joined 1966)
These are the signatures of the original 6 members of the band, which I used as a bookplate for my copy of their hardcover biography by Andrew Phillips!
Applejacks Signatures
The great Cherry Red label put together this special compilation CD of much of the Applejacks recorded material for the Decca label. It’s interesting to see that not only Lennon/McCartney provided a song to them but also Ray Davies of the Kinks. Copies of this CD are available both on Ebay and on Discogs, the record seeking search service for collectors.
The Applejacks including Like Dreamers Do
Saw this wonderful link by Malcolm Drew on YouTube which presents the Applejacks at the BBC:
In the past, I have stated clearly that some of my favorite books about the Beatles era are books that fill in lesser-known information about Beatles-related activities and about the other artists who may have interacted with them. I especially love stories about singers or groups that the Beatles gave away some of their early songwriting efforts too. This is particularly true about songs that the Beatles themselves never got the chance or had the desire to record in the studio during the Capitol/EMI time frame.
Here is a book that fits the bill of my description above:
Andrew Phillip’s book about the Applejacks: “Like Dreamers Do”Self-published on the 3rd ofMarch,2023. The book was published with the complete cooperation and help of the original Applejack members.
I was recently able to secure the last hardcopy version of his book. Andrew still has softcover edition copies available athis website:

The is a great book to acquire if you want to learn more about early 1960’s UK beat groups and the trials and tribulations of being a musical group during those times. It was an exciting time but it also involved a lot of hard work and travelling. Andrew did a fantastic job with this title and he has greatly enhanced and expanded our knowledge of this band and their relationship to Beatles history!
Nigel Pearce’s interview with the band:
The November 24th program of Groove Britain features Nigel Pearce’s excellent interview with the Applejacks. Click on the link provided below and scroll down until you see the November 24th, 2024 program. I do not know how long this program will be available at the link below but you can contact Nigel Pearce at redleadernigel@hotmail.co.uk if you have trouble locating the Applejacks interview which also features the author of the Applejacks book, Andrew Phillips!
The Decca 45 of the Applejacks version of the Lennon/McCartney “Like Dreamers Do” number appears below. Only recently did I acquire this item for the collection. You may notice a couple of familiar names on the label (shown below).
One was Mike Smith who with Dick Rowe were part of the decision-making team allegedly that was to decline the Beatles a recording contract based on their Decca audition in Jan of 1962. The other name Mike Leander was the man who was to eventually do the string arrangement for “She’s Leaving Home” on the Sgt. Pepper LP when George Martin was not available for the session when Paul wanted to have the arrangement done. He asked Mike Leander to do it and as a result George Martin later felt hurt that Paul had asked Leander to do the string arrangement for the song.
To me it is also very ironic that one of the men who was involved in the production side of the failed Decca audition of the Beatles was producing a song that the actual writers of the song had performed at that famous Beatles audition. Like Dreamers Do was one of the 15 numbers that the Beatles had performed for Decca in Jan of 1962. Do you think that Mike Smith was ever caught reflecting on that moment and asking himself “what if” we had signed the Beatles?
This is a picture of my copy of the “Like Dreamers Do” 45. I bought it primarily as an example of irony, seeing Mike Smith’s name on the song the Beatles performed at the 1962 audition and Decca being the label that turned the group down. Also bought it for the connection Mike Leander had with the “She’s Leaving Home” Sgt. Pepper track.
I also love to collect obscure cover versions of Beatles-authored songs!
It is great to see that the Applejacks did a great version of the song!
Fate can certainly be fickle and strange!!!

A performance picture of the the band that appears under the discography listing for the Applejacks at Discogs:
Andrew Phillips, who wrote the book shown above about the Applejacks, has recently collaborated with blog administrator David Bedford, on a new Beatles book to be issued in the spring of 2025. “What If” we wait to tell you what the premise of that book is going to be? You will be both startled and pleased!!!
French Beatles Collector Jacques Volcouve had amassed one of the largest collections of Les Beatles memorabilia in the world, until he decided a few years ago it was time to downsize and auction off many of the items he had acquired over the years. I have included a few YouTube links at the bottom of the page that feature stories about his collection and the auction. The purpose of this post will be to highlight some of the Beatles books and print material that Jacques has been involved with producing either as a writer, editor, or translator.
I have several of these titles in my own personal collection and Jacques was kind to send me photos of some of the work he has been involved with in Beatles book print media. All of the photographs of the books in question were sent to me by him.

George Harrison
Anthology 1943-2001
February 28, 2002 Published by Hors Collection
This well-documented book presents all the tracks recorded by George Harrison with the Beatles, as a solo artist and with other groups, notably the Traveling Wilburys, where he played alongside Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynn, Tom Petty and RoyOrbison. It also looks at his label, Dark Horse, his production company, HandMade Films and more. The best way topay tribute to this immense figure of pop music. It is still the only book written in French about George’ work

Jacques Volcouve sent me an email detailing his creation of 2 French Beatles magazines:
It was after helping to make the French version of the BBC’s Beatles’ story a triumph, broadcast three times on Europe1 in France in 1972 and 1973, that my brother Gilles and a few friends decided to set up the Club des 4 de Liverpool. We had two magazines:
– The Fab Four Publication. More than a fanzine, our aim was to turn it into the French version of the legendary Beatles Book Monthly. Each issue was devoted to a particular theme: tours, an album, Apple corps, the real reasons for their split, Paul’s fake death and three off-format issues devoted to Ringo, George and John. The magazine cost a fortune to publish. Without financial support, subscriptions didn’t cover the costs, so we were forced to stop publishing in 1984.
– The Fab Four Flash seemed to us to be a kind of secondary publication that served to bring together news, replies to letters, song lyrics and so on…
George and Ringo each encouraged us with a nice letter. (See photos below)
George went one step further and wore a t-shirt bearing the title the Fab Four Fun Club at a Warner convention in January 1977 in Acapulco. The design was done for us by French artist Jean Solé.
This tumblr site has a photo of George wearing the t-shirt with the Jacques Fan Club design by French artist Jean Solé.
The following two letters from 1976 are printed with the kind permission of Jacques Volcouve.
George was a tough critic so it is very nice to see how complimentary George was about Jacques and the Fan magazines that he shared with him.
A wonderful letter by Ringo to Jacques complimenting him on his magazine:

A special issue about Apple of The Fab Four Publication Magazine from June of 1978
The March 1975 issue of The Fab Four features a discussion of Dark Horse Records
Jacques referred to Fab Four Flash as his secondary magazine containing the following contents:

He told me that The DVD of the Rutles shown below is the French version which includes a booklet Jacques wrote and provided the illustrations for. There was no booklet in the UK version which had a different cover. Jacques also wrote the French DVD subtitles.

A few YouTube programs about Jacques and his massive Beatles collection and his decision of a few years ago to downsize
All things Must Pass! As we all get older, and our priorities change for multiple reasons such as health concerns and living expense issueswhen we retire,we often need to make difficult decisions as result.
In 2017, Jacques made the decision to greatly downsize his immense Beatles collection and share much of what made him very happy over the years with others. Here is the catalog of the thousands of items that Jacques put on the block:
Copies of the auction catalog -are available directly through Jacques at the email address noted below. It costs 20€ plus postage. It is better to ask him for the postage costs which are dependent on the country in which you live.
Jacques has also indicated that he has copies remaining in mint condition of the 25th anniversary magazine shown below for those who may be interested in purchasing them from him. The white one was printed by EMI France as a promotional item, and therefore quite rare. While the black cover was the regular published edition available at newspaper sellers and newsstands. You will need to send an inquiry to Jacques by email to see which version of the issue is available through him…
Jacques has also begun/started a series of podcasts with French journalist, Philippe Gault, called Beatles’Secrets, and it is available on these platforms:
