BEATLES BOOK ODDS & BOOK ENDS!!!

This Beatles Book Odds & Book Ends blog post is similar to many of the Hodgepodge posts that I have presented on the blog in the past. I would like to begin with another author that has written several books that have held strong interest for me and that I have purchased for my collection. Many of these books have a strong Beatles connection to them.

This post begins with a few books from author, Brian Southall:

BOOKS FROM FORMER EMI EXECUTIVE BRIAN SOUTHALL

Brian Southall is another writer who I have managed to acquire most of his book titles that he has written that have some type of Beatles connection or story within their pages!

Brian Southall began his writing career about the music industry back in the 1960s beginning at a local newspaper and then advancing to the likes of Melody Maker and Disc. Then he pursued a thirty year career in the record business. He started out at A&M, then moved on to EMI Records, where, he had a 15 year career, serving in press, promotion, marketing, artist development, and corporate communications.

From 1989 he was a consultant to Warner Music International, HMV Group and both the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) and the International Federation of the phonographic Industry (IFPI).

BEATLES MEMORABILIA: THE JULIAN LENNON COLLECTION

This book is both a happy one and a very sad one as well. A happy one because it features the collection of Julian Lennon of many of the Beatles items that he was able to purchase or acquire at auction over the years. The sad element is that he had to purchase them at all instead of receiving them as an inheritance after his father’s passing!

PAUL McCARTNEY: ALL THE SONGS

An interesting book about Paul McCartney’s songwriting and appearance on other artists records by Rick Swan published by Wymer Publishers in Bedford England in 2020. As I have stated before, the one problem with books such as these is when new recordings are issued, the book becomes in need of an update or a revised edition. The book is entertaining but the author I personally believe is overly harsh and critical on his assessment of some of McCartney’s numbers.

THE AMAZON US DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK:

“The Beatles: Literary Anthology recounts the group’s mercurial rise from the British Merseybeat scene; the “British invasion” that made them iconic figures in the USA; the experimentation with song structure and sound-recording technique that re-defined pop music forever; their embracing of psychedelic drugs, hippie utopianism and pacifism, amidst the social changes of the mid-to-late 1960s; the band’s acrimonious split, and the disparate, sometimes tragic post-Beatles paths followed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The strange extremes of a career virtually unparalled in terms of mass-media fame are also examined in thought-provoking articles: the American Far Right’s conspiracy theory that marked the Beatles as agents of Communism; the “Paul is Dead” myth, and the cryptographic reading of Beatles trivia that inspired it; the attempts of Lennon, with all his human failings, to live with his absurdly messianic status; the insane “messages” that the Manson Family girls deciphered from the lyrics of The White Album; the obsessions of disturbed Beatles fan Mark Chapman, and his tragic attempt to steal a little of Lennon’s celebrity.”

“The ultimate and most comprehensive book on the John Lennon FBI files. For the first time, the complete FBI files on John Lennon are published, explained and illustrated. These documents, completed by CIA and INS archives, shine a new light on John Lennon’s post-Beatles life in New York City. He was investigated for pornography, harassed for several years by President Nixon’s administration that wanted to deport him because of his political and anti Vietnam War activism. The FBI also investigated when Lennon and his family were later threatened for money. The last file tackles issues relating to his murder in December 1980. This book is a must have for every Lennon fan and for anyone interested in his life, artistic achievements, political activism and peace campaigns.”

“The perfect gift for any Beatles fan, In Their Lives is an anthology of essays from a chorus of twenty-nine luminaries singing the praises of their favorite Beatles songs.

Blue Rider Press
Publication date May 23, 2017

The Beatles’ influence—on their contemporaries, on our cultural consciousness, and on the music industry ever after—is difficult to overstate. We all have a favorite song from the band that made us want to fall in love, tune in, and follow our dreams. Arranged chronologically by the date of the song’s release, these essays highlight both the Beatles’ evolution as well as the span of generations their music affected. Whether they are Beatlemaniacs who grew up listening to the iconic albums on vinyl or new fans who stream their favorite songs on their phones, all of the contributors explore that poignant intersection between Beatles history and personal history.

With contributions from twenty-nine authors and musicians—Roz Chast on “She Loves You,” Jane Smiley on “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” Rosanne Cash on “No Reply,” Gerald Early on “I’m a Loser,” Rick Moody on “The End,” Maria Popova on “Yellow Submarine,” David Duchovny on “Dear Prudence,” Chuck Klosterman on “Helter Skelter,” David Hajdu on “You Know My Name (Look Up the Number),” and more—the breadth of the band’s impact is clear. From musings on young love and family strife to explorations of racial boundaries and identity, these essays pay tribute to a band that ran the gamut of human experience in a way no musical group has done before or since.

Timed for the fiftieth anniversary of the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, this anthology captures the full spectrum of reasons fans still love the Fab Four after all these years.”

PAUL IS DEAD HOAX – BY ANDRU J. REEVE

Paul Is Dead Hoax
Paul Is Dead Hoax

PROLOGUE – THE PAUL IS DEAD HOAX:

With the explosion of the internet and specifically of social media, conspiracy theories in the present day flourish and thrive. However, many of us of the older generation, remember in 1969 prior to the internet, when there was an unprecedented rumor that began to circulate that Paul McCartney had perished in a car accident in 1966. The people that promoted this rumor had spent significant time in uncovering both audio and visual clues that supported their contention. The Beatles and their entourage vigorously denied the validity of the clues yet news of the rumor ran rampant across the US on hundreds of radio stations. There even was a TV program featuring the renowned criminal attorney, F. Lee Bailey, presenting the so-called clues of Paul’s demise.

Though there are some Beatles collectors and fans that scoff at the rumor of the stories of Paul’s passing, I find the stories fascinating for both historical and academic purposes. The rumor did occur and it significantly increased Beatles record sales. For academics, it also helped to highlight how rumors are created, spread, and then eventually fade. For further information about rumor dissemination, seek out articles about selective attention, selective perception and selective recall, you will see how and why rumor and conspiracy theories can be started and spread and why they may be so popular in modern society.

I never personally believed the rumor but it was a lot of fun to find additional “clues” to support or substantiate it. It was a great conversation piece with peers and a goal for many was to be the person who could find the next clue.

It was a fascinating read for me to find the first printing of the book about the Paul is Dead Rumor by author Andru J. Reeve entitled, TURN ME ON, DEAD MAN: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE PAUL McCARTNEY DEATH HOAX back in 1994. And Now…

A New Edition of the Book: TURN ME ON DEAD MAN

Andru’s work was excellent in documenting the history of the rumor and many of the highlights designated as the clues that the Beatles had supposedly put in place to describe the tragedy are discussed in detail in his book. You will be amazed at the volume of the “clues.” Some were certainly far more credible than others. The stories that branched out from the initial rumor were also consistent with theories of conspiracy theory creation and dissemination. (one rumor can spawn many more)

Andru demonstrates how symbolism can be a factor in substantiating rumor and his documentation of the various stories surrounding the rumor are often riveting. There was some wonderful news recently sent to me by the the publishers of Genius Books & Media who will be reissuing the book with the proposed publishing date of October 17, 2025.

The hardcover edition:

Turn Me On, Dead Man (Hardcover) – Genius Books

The Book Description:

In the fall of 1969, a strange rumor swept across college campuses, radio stations, and newspapers: Paul McCartney was dead. The story claimed he had died in a car crash three years earlier, and that the Beatles had quietly replaced him with a look-alike. To hide the truth—or to confess it—clues were said to be scattered across album covers and hidden in the grooves of their songs.

For six remarkable weeks, thousands of fans and students pored over Beatles records, playing tracks backwards and examining covers for secret messages. Radio DJs devoted hours of airtime to debating the evidence. Newspapers sent reporters overseas to track down the truth. Was McCartney alive? If so, why did the clues seem so deliberate?

Turn Me On, Dead Man explores this unique moment in pop culture history. Drawing from interviews, articles, radio transcripts, and first-hand accounts, Andru J. Reeve reconstructs how the “Paul-is-Dead” rumor spread so quickly and why it captured so many imaginations. More than a simple hoax or urban legend, it became a cultural event that blurred the line between entertainment, gossip, and conspiracy.

With careful research and a storyteller’s eye, this book revisits the late-1960s media landscape, when one mysterious phone call to a Detroit radio station could ignite a national obsession. The result is a fascinating study of rumor, belief, and the power of the Beatles at the height of their influence.

There will be a new Afterword according to the publisher.

More detail on the back cover:

Would personally like to add a few observations that I would like to share with you about my own teaching experience dealing with the concept of “Rumor.”

Here are a few images that I presented in a collegiate Communication course that I taught that dealt with the concept of selective perception and rumor and how that could be demonstrated using the so called visual and audio “clues” from the Paul McCartney is Dead scuttlebut. How rumors are started, spread, and then defended by the people who believe them was discussed!

The mysterious Magical Mystery Tour banquet scene in the MMT booklet accompanying the Magical Mystery Tour album is shown below: The picture on the left which does not appear in the movie appears to be a banquet scene. Turn it sideways and people maintain they can see a skull! Do you see it? Do you see it because I told you what to expect? Do you see it at all? Am I planting the seed for what I wish you to see? All of these are valid questions when discussing selective perception and rumor and the many conspiracy theories we face in the media world we have in place in today’s world!

Sgt. Pepper´s Lonely Hearts Club Band Easter Egg – Is Paul Really Dead?

Someone looking for information to support the rumor inexplicably came up with the idea of holding a straight-edged mirror to the Sgt Pepper drum on the cover of the album. By doing so they were able to look in the mirror and see the message I ONE I (X) HE DIE with an arrow pointing up to the blue-clad, Paul. The I- ONE- I was said to represent the total of the remaining three Beatles-3. and the X was said to represent X-ing out the 4th individual out of the picture. You can see how many see this as being outlandish and far-fetched.

However if you have your mind set on believing the theory, you seek out things such as this to support the theory and you ignore things that may dispute the theory. People that supported this rumor would seek out photos of Paul where he did not conform in some way with the other Beatles like the out-of-step Paul on the Abbey Road cover photo. However, photos of the other three Beatles non-conforming would be ignored or not addressed as they would not be applicable to the rumor in question nor help to justify the rumor that the believers were trying to promulgate.

Saw this photograph on the internet of the individual holding the straight-edged mirror halfway up the center to reveal the so-called hidden message!

I especially encourage younger viewers to seek out Andru J. Reeve’s new edition of his book. You will learn a little history about the power and the influence of the band in the sixties and you will learn why conspiracy theories may be so popular in our present day world. You will see many common threads!

Here is the link if you are interested in purchasing the book!

Be prepared to learn significantly more about the concept of RUMOR in this book and to be thoroughly entertained in the process!

THE BEATLES WHITE ALBUM-THEMED ARTISTIC BOOKS FROM 2009 AND 2014

TWO BOOKS WITH AN ARTISTIC FLAIR WITH THE WHITE ALBUM THEMES:

Recently I acquired a couple of books on eBay that had previously slipped by me in my seemingly endless task of searching for interesting books about the Beatles. Maybe it is a sign of me slowing down with age as I do not recall having seen these two titles before. In any case, I was very happy to run across them on eBay. It is truly amazing to see how so many angles can be devised for book publications with the Beatles as the inspiration for their respective projects! Both of the books in question have artistic expression as their focal points.

The first title “The White Album: A Collection of Images Inspired by the Songs of the Beatles was put together to mark the White Album’s 40th anniversary. The songs in the book are not strictly limited to White Album numbers!

The first book was put together by artist and writer Russell Walks. Despite having The White Album as part of the title, there are some songs illustrated by the various respective artists within that are featured in the book that are not from the White Album. I have provided a few links for you to learn more about this release!

The two White Album titles explored in this post, perfectly fit the type of Beatles book that strongly appeal to the collector in me. They are small books in the number of pages and had a smaller circulation than larger mass appeal Beatle titles. It is these independently published books that I love to show to others when they view my collection as they have a special appeal to other collectors as well. For example, when one of these titles is shown to a fellow collector, you can often hear “Wow, where did you find that book?” or “Can you find a copy of that book for me?”

Those type of questions are music to this collector’s ears!

THE PUBLISHER’S DESCRIPTION:

“Artist and writer Russell Walks gets a little help from his friends and explores the work of the greatest band ever in “The White Album: A Collection of Images Inspired by the Songs of The Beatles”. Think of “The White Album” as a series of “visual cover songs”, each of which was inspired by the Beatles song of the same name. In addition to the images, each contributing artist speaks about their work – Not just about the songs that originally inspired them, but about the choices they made as they worked. There’s no doubt that The Beatles influenced the way many of us look at the world, and in “The White Album”, we can see those influences in the gorgeous, meaningful work of 17 artists at the top of their game.”

The book that I purchased: (the photographs shown below are the photos from the eBay advertisement that I purchased the items as a result of)

I obtained this book through this eBay site: Beatles Yesterday,Today andTomorrow | eBay Stores

Though a small book in the number of pages, this 2nd book that I acquired recently was also a true pleasure to obtain. This White Album book’s primary focus are Frank Vacanti’s visions of designing a piece of art on an individual copy of the White Album.

This book entitled The White Album Project is truly a unique presentation of using the stark white Beatles album cover to be adorned with individual artistic designs by Frank Vicanti on individual copies of the LP. A work of art on a work of art. I am sure John and Yoko would have loved this idea.

This 36 page booklet was put together and organized by Frank Vacanti out of San Francisco, California and was published in 2014 by Garland Graphics!

Postscript – RICHARD HAMILTON

Would like to end today’s post with a brief discussion about artist Richard Hamilton whose minimalist cover follow-up to the grandioise Sgt Pepper previous album design of Peter Blake raised quite a few eyebrows in the critic circles. The Beatles reputation for always doing something different was certainly secure. Richard Hamilton is the artist that the Beatles hired to design both the White Album cover of “The Beatles” the double white album and the poster contained within the LP. Several years ago I bought this Richard Hamilton book featuring his signature for my collection.

The all white motif of Hamilton’s was to become a fixture in the Lennon household specifically, with the white piano used on Imagine and the pure white room at Tittenhurst Park used for the Imagine video. The White Album cover with no pictures/photos on the cover, fit in well with Yoko’s affinity for minimalist art. I can see why John’s favorite Beatles album was THE WHITE ALBUM as he was coming back from his psychedelic haze of 1967.

Hamilton’s signature:

Back cover of the book:

A photo that I saw on the internet and the photographer was unfortunately not listed. It is a photo of Richard Hamilton working on the White Album poster as Paul is there to check on the poster’s progress. If anyone knows the photographer of this shot please let us know and we will offer proper acknowledgement. Thank you!

This is another example of having a collecting obsession. As I was writing this post, Copy #9 of THE WHITE ALBUM PROJECT ART BOOK 2014-BY FRANK VACANTI also became available on eBay at the beatlesplusbaseball seller ID!

I could not resist having copy Number 9, Number 9, Number 9 so I purchased it as well. well, I guess the only harm that I caused as a result was to my wallet. LOL!

Happy hunting!

BEATLES BEFORE & BEYOND BY CAROLE M. HOPKIN-A VERY RARE BOOK BY MARY HOPKIN’S SISTER

THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND

I have posted this book before and it always attracts a lot of intense interest from viewers. It is by Carole M. Hopkin who is a painter and an artist who also happens to be the sister of Mary Hopkin, who we as Beatle fans are very aware of because of her association with Apple records, Paul McCartney, and the Beatles. This book entitled: Beatles & Beyond by Carole M. Hopkin was published in 2013 by Merton Press.

As a collector, it was one of the most difficult books for me to find and locate for my Beatles-related book collection. It must be noted that the book’s primary connection does not have the Beatles as its main focus. It is about the fascinating experiences of the life of Carole M. Hopkin. A friend in the UK wrote to me when I ran my old Beatles in Print Facebook page and was looking for a copy of this book. The Facebook friend told me he had an additional copy in his collection and that I could purchase it from him if I was interested.

I was delighted to say that I certainly was and quickly moved to add the wonderful book to my library. This is the book I acquired from him (shown below). As you may or may not know I try to collect many of the books that even haphazardly have something to do with or provide additional information that have a connection to the Beatles or the people that made contact with them over the years.

Sometimes you learn more about the true nature of the individuals that comprised that great band from these more obscure books than from an official biographer! That is usually due to the primary celebrity being more at ease in those situations. However, being in contact with the Beatles and their menagerie can also be a curse because those people often lose their own personal identity because they ONLY become defined based on their contact or association with the band. Relatives of any celebrity face the same dilemma. They are often unfairly compared or measured against the accomplishments of a brother or sister, or mother or father.

Mary Hopkin

Witness the trials and tribulations of Julian and Sean Lennon and James McCartney who are constantly compared with the accomplishments of their respective fathers. After acquriing this book I wonder if Carole Hopkin experienced the same pressures of being compared with Mary due to her initial success at Apple with the worldwide hit of Those Were The Days.

Carole is an accomplished artist and painter and even though I know she has deep respect for her sister, the recognition she may receive can often be presented in public news forums as being under the shadow of her sister’s musical accomplishments.

The cover of the book:

Some biographical information from Carole’s book:

The back cover of the book:

Beatles & Beyond

A George Harrison Friar Park Garden sketch by Carole M. Hopkin. These few page excerpts from the book are presented under fair use.

Carole’s sketch of the mansion at Friar Park done at the request of George’s brother. Carole mentions that Friar Park was a Convent at one time. There have been reports since, that dispute the Convent descriptor as a group of nuns did reside there in an educational function but it was not officially known as a convent. Scott Cardinal, an authority on Friar Park could set us straight on that matter, for sure!

Photographs apparently taken by Carole Hopkin that appear in her book of several prominent people in the Beatles story, great Beatles friend and confidante, Mal Evans, and the notorious individual often described as the villain who led to the breakup of the Beatles, Allen Klein. It is my personal belief that their breakup was due to far deeper problems than the easy way out of blaming a single individual. It may simply may have been due to the natural progression of their lives.

A beautiful sketch by Carole M Hopkin of the Casino at Monte Carlo that appears in her wonderful book:

Advice for Collectors

I highly recommend this book to you if you are fortunate enough to locate a copy. It took me close to 3 years before I could find someone that had a copy in their collection in the UK. You will see many wonderful sketches, read many wonderful stories, and you will get a distinct flavor for the time.

As a collector, I love this rare unique book and you will too!!!

Keep your eyes open on such sources such as eBay, Abe Books or other international book search services if you are trying to track down a copy to purchase for your collections!!!

BUZZ’S BEATLES SCRAPBOOK #2

Well the reaction to the first Beatles scrapbook post was very positive and therefore their presentation will continue but I had a change of heart about one element of the scrapbooks. I am not planning on avoiding the presentation of controversial topics or potential negative information about the band. I will be presenting articles that deal with the murder of John Lennon though not making that the focus of a particular Beatles scrapbook’s content.

Also some negative articles portrayed in some of the tabloid press as part of the scrapbook potpourri will be shown from the scrapbooks. This is not to give credibility or to lend credence to the gossip articles or to demonstrate the veracity of everything that is shown. By presenting the multitude of Beatles articles presented over the years, both good and bad, you will see many truthful well researched and substantiated articles, but also gossip media as well. We know that many people prefer to read rumor, and conspiracy theories because of the often explosive nature of those type of stories, not because of any basis in fact. Hopefully, with these scrapbooks you will be exposed to a healthy balance of what has appeared over the years in the various print media.

You may be pleased with some of the articles and others may anger you but I caution you not to shoot the messenger!!! If album reviews are presented that you disagree with, do not personalize your criticism to me as it does not mean that I personally agree with the negative review. My goal has always been to expose you to the various print material about the Beatles that have been issued or appeared over the years, both positive and negative…

So sit back, relax, and hopefully, enjoy!

A review of London Town from 1978:

A story about the Lapidos Fest for Beatles Fans:

An early Charles Rosenay convention and an ad for one of my favorite Beatles books:

BEATLES RELATED RECORDS

Some of the picture sleeves stored in the scrapbook: One of those rare times that both John and Paul were on the same page politically as Paul released Give Ireland back to the Irish and John released The Luck of the Irish and Sunday Bloody Sunday dealing with the crisis In Ireland as it relates to the British involvement in the crisis!

A Beatles novelty record:

I love George’s B-side on this record:

If we ever get a Rubber Soul box set I want to hear John’s full original demo for What Goes On which has a radically different feel to the released version of the song!

A rare Lennon song that received virtually no airplay at all.

Mary Hopkin

Mary, Mary— Quite Contrary Mary Hopkin never seemed comfortable to me in much of the material Apple asked her to record. That is a subjective opinion, of course, but I believe she has stated as much in some select interviews she has done over the years!

My Sweet Lord

Yoko’s controversial cover for her Now or Never Apple 45. Featured a photo of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam:

“Walking in the Park with Eloise” is a jazz instrumental written by Jim McCartney, Paul’s dad, and later recorded by his son Paul McCartney, reflecting a heartfelt connection between father and son. This is the picture sleeve of the song. The flip side was Bridge on the River Suite which was an instrumental by Paul.

From RIngo’s Goodnight Vienna album:

A #1 Wings 45:

Despite some McCartney critics detesting the song, I love it. Great melody line and I believe McCartney did this number in order to sock it to some of his critics accusing him of being too saccharine!

Not quite boys, but I give you credit for trying!

The rare Girl picture sleeve:

Ending this scrapbook with a copy of my withdrawn picture sleeve of Leave My Kitten Alone which should have been released early in the Beatles career. Fantastic Lennon vocal on the Anthology recording where it eventually appeared!

The other side of the sleeve:

WELL I JUST HAD TO LAUGH … AN UNUSUAL BEATLES BOOK BY JEFF WALKER

I JUST HAD TO HAVE A LOOK HAVING READ THE BOOK. DOES THE JOKER LAUGH AT YOU???

I have an affinity for special Beatles-related books that have a different angle or approach to one of our favorite subject matters. One of the group’s characteristics, if you can ascribe individual character traits to a group entity, was their brilliant sense of humor or (humour). This book by Jeff Walker with illustrations by Mike Constable. certainly fits the bill as it captures many of the significant humorous comments or circumstances surrounding the astounding lives of the Beatles. I throroughly enjoyed this book and I believe you will too.

Everyone has a different concept as to what they may view to be funny. For example, some people believe that some of John’s sarcastic comments over the years designed to cut certain people down to size were insensitive and not funny. However others saw the same comments as being able to cut through to the true nature of the individual he was describing. Take your pick!!! Their jokes and comments were varied enough to have a little something for everyone! You be the judge!!!

The Walker menu in this book covers it all and you smile often when you read it!!!
